Looking to move up from 22 to the world of 17 HM.
Attracted to the NEF single shots due to price as a start. Anyone have any comments on these and the pros / cons of the HMR vs. HM2 ? Just used for plinking, unlikely any hunting so thinking that the HM2 is a lot cheaper to feed.
Also suggestions for an economical scope ?

HMR = 22 mag necked down to .17 = big gain
mach2 = 22 long necked down to .17 = small gain (not worth it)

stick with the HMR you wont regret it later
 
Hey IG: If you have a .22 I would move on up to the HMR. I don't really think to have a 22 and a HM2 is any sort of gain. I have done the same as I have a great 22 already. Around here 17HMR runs about 12 bucks for 50 so its still not too much to shoot and it kinda gives you a rifle for 0-50 and 50 to 150 yards for the sake of argument.
Scope wise the new Banner 17 is only 115$. In the scope world thats pretty economical.
 
I've got one of the NEF single shots, and I love mine. While plinking with it is fun, blowing gophers to kingdom-come is even better :D :D .
The price is nice, and the single shot aspect forced me to learn how to aim. I mean really aim. Can't blaze away at a target, although that has its own merits :p :D .
For an economy scope, I have a Tasco 2.5-10x42mm Varmit on mine. ~$90 at Wholesale last time I looked.

Not a whole lot of difference with the HM2. The HMR is a whole other ballgame, accurate to over 200yds and deadly on vermin up to beaver size..

I have a Savage 93R-BVSS in .17 HMR and it will shoot .3 inches at 100 yds. I shot a gopher last year at 248 yds, and it didn't move after being hit. The HMR has replaced my need for any more .22's
 
I bought an HMR last 2 weeks ago and havn't shot it yet. I'll let you know.

My question is is the HMR really not suited to kill coyotes. Or is it just too hard for people to believe that it is. If you get my drift. With that said I'm gonna hunt them with the hollow point CCI's for better penetration and I'm gonna let them get real close. Fooled by my expert calling
 
Every time I think about using my hmr on a coyote I think of the punishment some of the ones I have shot have taken and kept going.

I guess it would work but I would use one of the 20 gr loads to get better penetration. I would use it for fox, if there were any where I hunted.
 
17 hmr

I used a buddies .17 a few times, and he uses it a lot for Jackrabbits, Coyote, and Fox. 6 out of 10 for terminal performance on the dogs, but not bad on the Jacks. If you want a rim fire that can reach out and touch somthing, this is your gun. Accuate to 200 yards, but it takes some practice, and the wind tends to wreak havok if it blows hard. Tripods are a must for those long shots. I use polymere tipped bullets. You'll appreciate the devestaion when you open up a rabbit that's been hit by one.
 
the .22 doesn't cut it for me anymore. I'm sold on the .17. I hunted with the .22 for many many years until i learnt how insigificant it is on critters like the Jackrabbit. Stupid things just sit there and soak up my .22 shots like a bean bag sack. Not uncommon to plug a ribbit 6 times. My suggestion. give the .17 a chance. You won't plug a rabbit more than twice.
 
.22 Magnum is the only way for me. I've tried the .17HMR and it just don't cut the mustard for me. And I've shot some pretty small things at 150yrds or so with it so it's plenty accurate. I'm sure some people find it great and love it. To them I say: "I'm glad it worked for you" But I'll never recomend it. I'm a classic .17 sceptic.

OK, .22 mag is a differnt story. It's like saying i like apply pie from Safeway, and comparing it to grandma's homeade apple pie....No comparison. .22 mag provides more range than the .22 long rifle with more velocity making it a decent varmit round. I don't have a rifle though that takes the Mag round, or else i'd use it more often. .22 LR i wouln't use for anything bigger than a squirel at 50 yards. I use it a lot for partdige though (roughies), and it does a good job at that.

Now if you want a real coyote gun. 22.250 centerfire is my preference, but that's moving off the subject.
