So I have recently purchased A savage bolt action. 17 Hmr I am wondering what size critter wouldthis caliber be effective at taking

I mainly use mine for groundhogs, but have shot a couple Coons with it as well. The only problem with the 17 is wind really wreaks havoc with them.

Wind reeks havoc compared to what? Certainly not compared to other rimfire (that wives tale that keeps getting regurgitated online was proven to be false)... compared to centerfire? Then of course it is not as good in wind... we have taken grouse and hares with ours and coons and foxes and a few coyotes... BUT I will be the first to say that the HMR is on the light side for coyotes, we use the 20 grain XTP bullets... and we only used them in random but ideal circumstances... but it did the trick... if you are serious about game bigger than foxes or coons, then I would move up to the .22 centerfire group.

Thanks guys sounds good I don't shoot critters much but glad to know what I can do with a gun just in case the scenario arises

I use mine for gophers ans rabbits mostley i have taken a few yotes under 100 yards with headshots. worked good but anything farther than 100 yards on yotes sizes critters might be pushing it.
