17 HMR vs 22 Mag

17 HMR vs 22 Mag?

I know I own a 17 hmr. Nice little gun, but I am not too fond of the 17 gr v-max version. Nor am I really endeared to the 20 gr either.

It might be the rifle, but I have to re-sight it in if I choose to shoot one or the other. Also, I am not sure about that graph, but I do know that on a calm day that gun is very accurate at 100 yards. Throw in a typical Alberta wind, and it is not so accurate. There have been days where I shot the more expensive .223 because I could actually hit the gopher at 100 yards, rather than guessing the damn drift on the little 17 gr pills.

As for splatter....I dunno, my 223 again gave better action. I am thinking about selling it because I have not used it in a very long time, due to the reasons above and it also costs me about the same to load up a bunch of 223 rounds.

Which is quite normal for any cartridge, including the 22lr.

You are quite correct, perhaps I need to elaborate further. With other rifles/ammo, in my experience there are slight variations to the zero when using different ammo.

In my 17HMR it is in excess of 12" on the x/y axis's. In other words....almost off the target at 100 yards.

Now THAT kind of dramatic difference I have not seen before...not even in my (ex rifle) Mini-14 target.

With my .22 LR, there was a bit of difference, but not that much between brands/bullet weight.

After all the hype is gone the 22 mag will still be the king, it is such an amazing caliber-bullet-combo, other will survive... JP.

At 100 yards, all six 17gr and 20gr 17HMR loads that I tested, impacted within about two to three inches of each other.
