.17 HMR worth the time?

Hello guys. Just looking to tap into the wealth of knowledge you all have. I am looking at purchasing a new rimfire rifle. I want an accurate rifle that has small game athority at or near 100yd. Some target shooting will also be in store. Crow hunting and maybe a little coyote hunting would be main use. Anyone who owns one or has experience shooting one feel free to chime in. The firearm that has caught my eye would be a savage 93r17 left hand bolt. Any info on this gun in particular or other suggestions also welcome. Thanks guys and merry Christmas!
 
I've got a 93r17. I love that gun for gophers. While I have shot a coyote with it, it's definitely not ideal. Great for small game though. Just make sure you use head shots for anything you plan on eating as the round is quite destructive.
 
I would have to agree that while many coyotes have been taken with the 17 HMR there are far more ideal cartridges for it.

It is great for 100 yard small game, I figure it to be the perfect gopher gun, (if you have gophers where you are).

Be sure to put a decent scope on it, one with 12x or more optical zoom on it to get the best of the round.

The best advice I would put forward is buy it you will have a pile of fun with the hmr. joe-nwt summed it up perfectly.
 
I have the Marlin .17 HMR and love it. The previous comments on this cartridge are bang on. Its great for the smaller game and extremely accurate at the 50' to 100' ranges I use it for. I haven't used my 22 since purchasing the .17
 
The 17HMR works well for ground squirrels, but I sold my 17HMR, and kept my 17mach2, as it does a great job to over 100 yards, and ammunition costs half as much.
 
Buy it, you will love it, great gun, good calibre for small game and with a good sight it is accurate well beyond 100 yards for small game as it has a very flat trajectory.

Despite what has been said above a well placed head shot will prove effective on larger game but i do agree with them that this is primarily a small game calibre.
 
Great caliber(so is the hm2). Love what the hmr does on gophers. Would be good for rabbits as well. I shoot that more then my 22's now. 22's see use when I feel like plinking cans but thats about it.
 
Have a Savage BTCSS in .17HMR

On a clear day, no wind I can hit a 12" length of vertical hanging 3/8" chain all day long at 200 yds.

Bit tougher when there is a cross-wind.

I don't shoot it as much as I should, but it is accurate as hell with a Bushnell Varmint scope on it.

If you already have a 10/22 and are looking for a fun rimfire, then go for it!
 
Excellent gents. I think that sums it up. The glass I will be purchasing will be a leupold rifleman 4-12x40 or a slightly better modle. Perhaps a mildot reticle too :). It won't be a main coyote rifle but if I am calling crows and a curious pup trots in. Well whaddya doo.
 
I have a CZ 452 American in 17 HMR.
It is a fun, fun, fun gun to shoot crows with.

Amazingly accurate with Hornadys 20 grain bullet.
As has been noted, it is quite destructive inside of 150 yards.

I do believe there are better coyote rounds, though.

Great little round for gophers and the like, but marginal for anything bigger than a fox IMHO. I found that you do get some wind drift issues at 100 yards+ out here on the prairies. I'm looking at the .17 hornet, you can get down to roughly the same price per round as the HMR if you reload, but it's got more oomph for 'yotes and it would be a legit 250 yd + rifle for gophers and crows...
 
I cannot seem to find a good selection of hm2 chambered rifles though. I had looked at the round. Anyone point me in the direction of a new rifles in the price range of say a savage.?? [/I]
 
How do you like the cz? I have heard that the throw of the bolt is not very scope friendly. Any troubles with that particular modle? I hear they are all great shooters thought.
