I have a Ruger 77/.17 Hornet that can shoot 1-1.5 inch (5 shot groups) with factory ammo.

I know there is a reload that would be out perform the factory ammo

I am trying different things, wondering if anybody has tried neck sizing only, or partial full length sizing?

Also getting ready to increase the COL from 1.715 to 1.775, without actually touching the lands.

Anyone have any luck increasing accuracy by doing this with the .17 hornet?

Any comments appreciated

I'm having great luck with my CZ. It seems to like a 20gr V-max over 10.1g of LIL Gun. Last group (lucky?) was .238". I neck size only and the max length was determined by the magazine.

Cheers

WOW, that's really good, is that a 3 shot group or 5?

The first groups I shot with my ruger was .5 inches.

I am having decent luck with 9.9 gr of Lil Gun, never took it above the max (10 gr), but maybe I should have pushed it, no signs of pressure.
What is your COL?
I'm thinking of going 1.775, still fits in the mag fine.

What would your CZ groups like with with factory ammo?

I have two Cz a varmint and an American, have tried several powders, little gun was one, that i had poor results, very erratic. H110 very slow, have tried, 4227, H110, trail boss, ADI2207 (H4198), VV120 and H335,
loads listed in accuracy, and consistency, Both rifles shoot sub 1" ten shot groups, and the varmint is closer to 1/2, esp with VV120 or ADI2207, the American has not been bedded, and is more a 3/4-1" groups.
All loads 1.750 OAL.
VV120 10.5gr, 6.5 rem primer and Hornardy brass, seated to max mag length with 20gr v-max,
ADI2207 (h4198) 11.7gr, WSR, Hornardy brass, or PP 22 hornet resized, mag max length, 20 v-max.
IMR4227, 9.5 gr, 6.5 rem and 20 v-max,
ADI 2207 (H4198) 11gr, WSR, Hornrdy brass, 25gr Hornardy HP,
trail boss, 3.5gr WSR and 25gr Hornardy HP, (1750) fps.

The trail boss load has same point of impact at 50m as, both the VV120 and H4198 11.5gr, and is 1/2 inch lower than 11.7gr of H4198, as I now have one .17 Hornet in new Zealand and a silencer installed, its nice and quite for built up areas, with trail boss.

I full length once every five loads, neck size the rest of the time, Redding dies,
My fireforming load is 1/2 gr less of Vv120 or H4198, and I get very good accuracy from it, 1" easy, now shoot them at small game as well.

I see you have a ruger, not always know for outstanding accuracy, and that has ben my experience, with the two ruger's cenetrfires, I have had, sold one the other is a#1 in 300H&H, its ok 1.5, plenty good for my needs, some day I will do sum work on the front stock.
Stubblejumper might chime in he had a ruger in .17 hornet, and I think did a bunch of work, bedding, trigger to improve it, think he may have moved it on, perhaps he will chime in,

My Ruger was inconsistent from the factory, with every load that I tried. I bedded the action , installed a Rifle Basix trigger, and did very minor fitting where the bottom metal mates to the recoil lug, and the accuracy improved and became much more consistent. However, my CZ varmint is still more accurate, so the Ruger was sold. I have a Cooper on the way that will be taking over from the CZ. It is built and should be here in a couple of weeks. My CZ liked N-120 a little more than H-4198, but I now have some Lil Gun to try as well in the Cooper.

Thanks for your input guys, I got that feeling that while the Rugers are a beautiful firearm and very well built, but less accurate and consistent than the CZ's and Savages.

If I can manage to get 1 inch groups at 100 yards with 25 gr bullets I'm more than happy, because I'm only hunting foxes and the odd coyote inside 200 yards, 1 moa at 100 yards should do the trick for inside 200 yards, I understand people that are shooting 300 yards, simply want more accuracy than 1 moa.

I have one load for 20 gr that is shooting O.K. (1 moa). I would like to develop a load for 25 gr HP, best I have is 1.5 inches at 100 yards, therefore I'm looking at making that load more accurate if I can, by increasing my COL and maybe buying neck sizing dies, hoping this might tighten up my group a bit.

I will re-assess in the summer, If I'm not satisfied, down the road the Ruger goes and I'll probably get something more accurate, but I think I can make it work for me needs.

Guys, thanks for your input

My Ruger was horrible with 25gr bullets, 1-1/2 moa at best. My 17 Hornet is basically a 200-250 yard ground squirrel gun, so moa just won't do for my application. The CZ was close to 1/2moa, and my 17Fireball shoots 1/2moa or better for five shots, and I am hoping that the Cooper in 17Hornet will match the 17Fireball to 200 yards accuracy wise.
