17 hornet

I am still waiting for my 17 Hornet ammo to arrive (useless UPS has been sitting on it 300 km away for 8 days now, not impressed at all) but I found it was cheaper to buy the ammo, shoot it then reload it, than to buy new brass, $39.99 for 50 brass or $44.98 for 50 rounds (2 boxes) loaded.

I have lots of 17 bullets leftover from my 17 Remington and 17 Fireball but Prophet River has some bullets: http://store.prophetriver.com/hornady-1/ and I just bought a box of 20 grain HP Nosler bullets from Nechako Outdoors, Mark is great to deal with there, e-mail him at: mark@nechakooutdoors.ca
Now that is a messy post but I hope it helps you out.

Hey, free time just in time for the first few hatches of mosquitoes!

Still really slowly picking away at the Martini project, but have not yet chambered the barrel.

Hi Folks

I reload for a CZ527 Varmint and a model 25 Savage in 17 Hornet. These guns are as cheap as it gets to reload for. I bought loaded round to get my brass. Only use 9 to 12 grains of powder and you can get 500 Z-max bullets for +/- $80 or buy better bullets for a bit more. The Z-max are soft. You may want PN#21830 RCBS neck sizer die as well.

My handloads shoot just as well or slightly better than factory. Best was 11 rounds into .316" at 100 yards(all I had left).
 
rpcw what are you using for powder? I have not shot my CZ Varmint yet as it is only -40 C here!!! I too am buying ammo to "make" brass because brass is a silly price. I have LilGun but not loaded anything yet. I hear A1680 works very well but cannot find any around here (MB).

Loading the 17, it seems that AA 2200 is one of the better powders. I know where there is a bunch of 1680 if you have some Reloder powders to trade. FS
 
Any of you seen Redding three piece dies for sale anywhere or if not those any 17 HH dies. My new CZ should be here next day or two so soon as I burn up the 500 rounds of factory ammo I bought last year I am going to need to start reloading. I plan to start with Lil'Gun cause I have lots but have been keeping my eyes open for some 1680 and 2200 as well. Would like to try them in a couple of different small bores. Merry Christmas top all of you.
 
I wish I had ammo for my CZ 17 Hornet, turns out that UPS has lost the ammo I bought, they are doing a lost package tracer. My wife works at a small business in town and from what she has seen with UPS deliveries this is not uncommon for UPS in our area at any time of the year.

H4198 worked really well along with H322 and AA1680. The price of brass is such nonsense!

Biggest things I noticed is that this shell seems quite efficient and you really have to minimize powder amount variations to get best consistency.
