.17 hornet

17H gets discussed on this thread;

This is a quote from a post I made on the above thread;

" OK, so lets do a comparison of the two Hornets, cause we been there done that. We rechambered two H&R Sportster 17 HMR's to 17 Hornet, shot them for about three months, sold them at the range and then happily went back to .22 K-Hornet... here's why;

I gotta say, I prefer our K-Hornets with 35 grain V-Max and Lil' Gun. If someone has a Hornet barrel, they would be further ahead to ream to K-Hornet and shoot the 35 VM's rather than messing with the 17H...

Actual numbers;
.22 K-Hornet with 35 V-Max and 13.5 grains Lil' Gun (max) = 3122 fps & 758 ft/lb
.17 Hornet with 25 V-Max and 8.9 grains Lil' Gun (max) = 3195 fps & 567 ft/lb

There is an incredible assortment of .224 bullets and a very limited assortment of .172 bullets, while the K-Hornet gives up little in trajectory, it gains huge in energy and even more (IMO) in versatility... it is a pleasure reloading .224 compare to .172... from champfering to seating 17H is a PITA.

Of course new stuff is fun... and if you just gotta, you just gotta (I did)... but sometimes the "tried and true" is justa better way to go... gonna stick with the K-Hornets for a long, long time. "

I have 2 hornets and will not be rechambering or going 17. Working with the little 17s requires new reloading and cleaning stuff. My big fingers do not work well on the little pills. As for the K, a buddy has one and it is a little faster. If I need faster I have others to do that. My sons loved the hornet for gophers and chose it over 22s,222 & 223. Good lunch AJ.

I have loaded the 17 hornet and 19 calhoon, neither are any more of a pain that regular 22 hornet. Nobody I know uses LilGun in 17 cal, AA 1680 is the preferred powder. The 35 bullet you speak of in your K hornet come with a pretty low BC, how does it group for you at 200 yards. Most folks shooting the hornet or the Khornet like the BC of 40gr vmax's for shooting past 100 yards.
The new 17 hornet has a place in my gun safe, next to my 19 calhoon and m K hornet and my full stock hornet and my CZ american hornet. Yes the new 17 hornet is more expensive to shoot than the 22 hornet but not much more. FS

Well concerning the quoted data... those are loads we actually tried and it was the closest apples to apples data that I could quote, so that is what I used... it was not meant to be a comprehensive thesis on reloading for the Hornets... with the 17H we started with Lil' Gun becuase I use it in so many loads that I always have alot on hand... with the 17H we settled on H322 in the end, very accurate... I have never used the 19C but I have a buddy that swears by it and another who swears AT it... I do load the 40 V-Max in my K-H's... I loaded 200 last night as a matter of fact... as far as ease of reloading... I have big clunky hands and the 17 pills are a PITA for me I find the .224's much easier IMO... as far as the 35's in H, it is a 0-150 max kinda load for us (prefer under 100) and we use it in brush country and bush for the most part... when out in the open it is the 40VM and with our 24" bolts the 50 GMX works well max (bordering on compressed)... the only loads I use the actual 45SP Hornet bullets in are our reduced loads with TB for hares and grouse. Some guys love the 17H and thats ok with me... my personal experience with it was underwhelming and I personally prefer the K-Hornets... if I was dumping more of my retirement funds into another gun, I would get a 19C before a 17H... but for now the 17KH and .223 can handle a load/situation I encounter... on light-hearted afternoons, truth be told, I can often befound with an LR, WMR, HM2 or HMR in my hands, and enjoying it immensely.

I have always liked the .17's. Started with my first in 1966 a .17 based o the .222 case. Then .17 Remington and a .17 Rem AI ... and the last was a .17 Ackley Hornet. The little Ackley Hornet was great to about 200 yards, very flat shooting and quite quiet.
