17 Mach 2 buildings

I didn't build, but I own one. The parts were getting tricky to obtain, so when an assembled one came up I bought it.

It has a chrome-plated bull barrel, some other mod's but appears to be mainly stock, shoots well.

I put one together, but haven't done much with it. You need a heavy bolt and or handle and extra power spring. When I first put mine together with a Kidd two stage, which has a low at rest hammer force, it was bulging cases pretty bad. I'm using a heavy handle and now have an extra power hammer and main spring and it seems to be resistant to bulging. I want to do some mods to the bolt to increase mass to build in a bit more insurance. One thing I've read a lot about, is keeping the chamber clean, pulling a bore snake through every 50-100 shots.

17 M2 is really not ideal for a semi - it is just on the thin edge of possible. As soon as the bolt begins to come back, the case mouth is unsupported and pressures have not gone down yet so it will split the case a bit. A heavy bolt helps, but there is hardly enough energy to cycle the bolt if it stays closed too long.
Maybe a really short barrel would allow pressure to drop quicker ... naw - it would still be fussy.
If there were a really small locked-bolt action - maybe a handgun action - that might work.
The 17 m2 cases are very thin - and a lot of them have the beginning of a split in the case - right out of the box.
A few years ago, I tried chambering a Beretta 950b in 17 m2 - that’s a prohib .22 short blowback gun. It didn’t go so well - too much power and it just blew the grips off etc. As soon as the action began to open, gas escapes - too soon - and it got all loud and bothersome. I have an old rotating lockup .32 Savage handgun that might work - but really - .22 LR is just better in a semi
 
I built several 17 HM2's, one was on a 10/22... had a couple "kabooms" with that one, one of the kaboom blew the magazine out the bottom of the rifle... I kept working on it and got it running smoothly... sold it to an impatient squirrel hunter. I also built a 77/22 as a 17 HM2 with a Volquartsen stainless Running Boar type barrel... if I were you, I would build on a bolt action. That 77/17 build was freaking accurate... sold that too eventually, but not before it slew a passel of nut-eaters.
 
Got one of the savages- only put 10 quick rounds thru it so far-going to scope it soon as gopher season usually starts in march down south..then I can do a honest range report.
 
Another take on Mach 2 builds I have is an ISSC SPA in .22lr, with a .17 Mach 2 liner in the barrel. This has a biathlon type straight pull and is a very underrated rifle.

I am due to create a modest review on this, versus the 10/22 build versus a Sako Quad with a .17 Mach 2 barrel. Just waiting for the hunting crowd to free up the local range.

This would be a very economical way to have a .17Mach 2 rifle.

New Year break hopefully.

Who installed the liner and where did you get it if you dont mind my asking
 
I purchased the liner from the EE here on Gunnutz. They are available periodically, I think people buy them but never have them installed.

I had Dennis Sorenson (he is on here as Guntech) install the liner. I think I paid around $100 for the liner and less for it to be installed. The rifle I picked up cheap too, so I now have a .22LR and a .17 Mach 2 as well as a .17HMR version.

I got screwed over with Brownells ordering 2. Now they werent in stock last i checked. Thanks for the info
 
I plan on building a 17Mach2 on a BRNO #1. I have everything i need including reamer and gauges, just need to buy a new lathe as I sold my old one. Another ongoing project
 
I bought a Magnum Research MLR 1722 and put their 17 Mach II carbon fibre barrel on it. It came with a heavier spring and bolt/knob assembly. It has worked very well for, showing a slight preference for the Hornady ammo as compared to the CCI ammo. I now have it in a Boyd's blue laminated stock. Scoped it with a Leupold VX-II LR 4-12 x 40 AO and have never looked back.
It will put 10 rounds into a single hole group at 25 yards that spans less than a quarter inch at the outside edges, as fast as I can pull the trigger, and will still keep a full clip (10) inside 1" at 100 yards on a windy day, when watching for wind gusts.
Has been a very fun rifle to hunt and shoot over the years! Am a big fan! Would love to have a left handed bolt action in a 17 Mach II!
My last harvest was a one shot 40 lb lynx at 40 yards. Bang-flop with a high shoulder shot.
 
I built one and still have it based on an EABCO kit. Needs the heavy bolt and spring as stated. Also needs to be cleaned more frequently than a regular rimfire I find. I would just buy a VQ if I had the cash.
