I owned a Cooper Classic in 17Mach2 for a brief time, then sold it to a friend and ordered a Cooper Jackson Hunter in 17mach2 to replace the Classic.Hopefully,I will soon have the gun and a good supply of ammunition so that I can begin to reduce the gopher population.

By all indications as outlined by Phil, the hm2 should die, but due to it's excellent performance/cost it has a devoted following in the USA and Europe (not so much in Canada it seems). Therefore, I expect that ammo will be available in the future. Part of this depends on whether retailers will continue to stock it. Since Eley aparently costs less and shoots better, it would give the hm2 another boost if P&D or WSS carried Eley .17 HM2 ammo.

Since some folks are getting rid of hmr's due increasing ammo costs, they may look to replace it with either the hm2 or 22 mag. As many of us shoot gophers and the hm2 is generally more accurate than the 22 mag, the same or less cost for ammo and has less drop, it follows that some of those shooters create a demand for hm2 rifles. Finally, it is possible that CZ offer a .17 hm2 barrel (accessory) for their new 455 .22 rimfires. I would love to see that happen. It's too good to die.

We are aware that Eley is manufacturing the Mach 2 ammo and are trying to get some for the shelf. We have no problem in keeping ammo in inventory. Phil.

The HM2 is in no danger of disappearing. There are too many gun and ammo manufacturers supporting it.

In reality though, most HM2s run around 2100 fps. and most HMRs run closer to 2600 fps. Neither of the .17 is a good choice if you want to shoot on the cheap. That is what a .22LR is for, and it gets the job done inside 100 yards for a fraction of the cost of either. If I want to shoot something at longer distances with a rimfire, I'll take the one with the edge: the HMR. The added velocity gives you an extra 50-75 yards of range (run the numbers in JBM) and the price difference is insignificant for hunting usage.

Where in Canada do we have Prairie Dogs? Now if you are talking about gophers, it has already been on its maiden voyage to Sask. last May. I believe I blasted through a brick, which is a pile of loading into a 5 round mag. This year I have 2 new 10 rounders and an extra 5 rounder. FS

Yeah, yeah, OK, OK.... I live in Ontario where we have Ground Hogs (diminishing populations I might add...).

You know what I mean, gopher, prairie dog, Richardson Ground Squirrel etc.

This topic was previously beaten to death....

I tried it for a few days a couple of years ago - didn't have my 17 HM-2 with me but it was still great fun!

Hope I get a chance to visit again... SD

It seems those that shoot it, really respect it. We brought in ammo a year ago to supply customers buying our Cooper rifles in Mach2. However, the ammo sold out several times . Weève had so much call for the ammo, weève been securing as much as we can get. We have 123,000 rds coming late this month-much of it is already spoken for.
Gophers are going to have a rough spring!

How much do you have left?:)

I am awaiting that order myself, and I fully intend to do my share of gopher eradication this summer.:D

I just did a rough calculation and I figure about 50,000 rds is not spoken for.

Also, thanks to a member here, we found some CZ Americans in 17 Mach2. I'll bring in a few (they have 28) but they are a retailer so there's no great bargains. Looks like about $549 by the time we get them here. Anyone buying a Mach2 rifle can have ammo for $6.50 per box.

I have I 17 Mach 2, 2 17 HMR. and 1 22 mag. My wife's, go to critter in the garden gun, is CZ 452 in HMR. Mine is a Savage in Mach2. The 22 Mag has become a safe queen, too loud. lacks accuracy of the 17's.

That is a damn good price.

Talked to a guy this morning. He has better luck with the Hornady than the Rem in the semi autos.

So I have heard,I really only bought the 10/22 to convert to 22lr and sell the barrel and bolt conversion, and I am still leaning that way.
I can always use two 22lr rifles, but I really only need one 17Mach2.And even at $6.50 a box,the 17Mach 2 can still get expensive when I use them in a semi auto for plinking.:D
