Hey guys,

Any idea where I could find a Browning BL-17 (17 Mach 2) As far as I can tell only Browning makes/made a lever action in this caliber. I'm doing a little research on behalf of my brother who is looking for a little plinker gun to control pests around his property. The quieter the round the better. the 22 short is of course an option but he would like something with a little more jam. I suggested the 17 Mach 2 as a possible alternative the the 22LR. I welcome your opinions. Thanks.

im no expert, but i'd say to just stick with the 22lr. 17 mach 2's are more expensive, and if noise from even a 22 is a problem, then im guessing the ranges that your brother would be shooting at wouldn't be very far that a faster/flatter bullet would matter.

I wasn't aware you could buy subsonic 22lr, shorts yes... Interesting.
Price and practicality has no bearing on this decision. Distances could be up to 100 yards on vermin as big as raccoons and where he lives they get big. The 17 cal bullets give better performance and flatter trajectory compared to the 22 IMO.
He has access to several 22's of different types but wants something "else". Go figure.
The reason I mentioned noise level was so someone wouldn't recommend a 17 cal center fire. Anything non magnum in the rimfire realm would due.
We're just exploring our options and I'm just trying to be brotherly.
Thanks for the input.

There are some very good pellet rifles that will serve this purpose. The German brand Weirauch HK97 model comes with a built in suppessor, adjustable target trigger and fantastic accuracy. FS

I don't think a pellet gun would kill a raccoon. I've shot raccoons in the head at 5 feet with a 22lr and the damn animal just shook it off. Though...it gives a guy something to think about. I'll check them out for myself.

The 17HM2 is a great option for what you described. BL17's are super rare: good luck finding one. I recall reading they weren't very accurate compared to other 17's. As an alternative, I suggest looking for a Marlin semi-auto in HM2. I had one and it was very accurate. Should have kept it.

I'd be surprised if this pellet gun would not kill a raccoon with the right brand of pellet. FS

My brother has almost abandoned the idea of the 17M2. It was just a train thought we wanted to think through fully. He's leaning towards a lever action 22, something I suggested to him in the beginning. I did however put him onto a Cooper Arms in 17M2. We'll see what he says to that!

Thanks for all the help so far.
