Hey all.

Ruger 77 with the heavy barrel. 17 Mach II. Gray laminated stock (wood)

Had the barrel floated by a gunsmith at the shop where I bought it. Turns out he didn't take enough wood outta the fore stock. Was shooting not too bad until the barrel heated up.

So..........

Took the action outta the stock and filed some wood out. Re assembled and cleaned the barrel. Tightened the 2 screws down quite tight. Now my point of impact has changed (not a big deal and re adjust scope) and the shots seem to be "not very" consistent at 100 yards.

Scout 800 was out at the range and suggested doing a copper removal cleaning to the barrel.

Any other thoughts here?

If more info is needed, please let me know. Seemed to shoot not too bad in the beginning.......

Some .17's need lots of cleaning.
It's quite common for rimfires to shoot best with a pressure point under the barrel near the tip of the forearm. Try putting pieces of business card between the barrel and forearm and trying it.

I like to klean my .17 every 30-50 rounds. These things get quite dirty. And like Slash 5 said, some guns like the added preasure pad. I use elastic bands and wrap them around the barrel and use them as preasure pads; that seems to work good.

It may need glass bedding as well. How are you cleaning it. I clean my .17 with a brass brush every 200 rounds, and just with a normal patch and solvent every 20-50 rounds. This process seems to work good.

And wind plays a huge roll in your groups. Were you shooting with any ammount of wind?

Good luck :)

u mean you clean your .17's:confused: lol

ever since my 917v 17hmr has been painted i dont clean it at all. gotta be 200 rounds since then and the groups keep getting better if anything.

i have a homebrew bughole tuner installed in my gun (costs around $1.50 i think) and with just a little playing around i shrunk the groups about 1/4". it was a cold day so i only took 10-15 shots last year and havent played with it since. i can likely shrink the groups some more with playing around with the amount of force is being put on the barrel. its installed about 2" from the end of the stock. try it out but there will be a hole in the bottom of the stock which isnt visible unless u look at the bottom of the gun.

u might need to bed the action and some of the barrel as well...
