What is the difference between these two cartridges? Is one harder on the barrel than the other or foul more? From what I have read there is no brass readily available for the FB (Mach IV) but that should change in a year or so if this cartridge becomes popular. I kind of like the idea of a 17 cal center fire for the varmints out to 300 yards (proper conditions), watching the hit in the scope and low reloading cost.

17 Fireball is based on the smaller 221 Rem case, the 17 Rem is larger and holds more powder (= more velocity)

I think either would fit your needs, but as of right now the 17 Rem has component brass available, which is not the case for the new Fireball. Personally I would go with the new 17 FB, its very efficient and not far off the larger 17

Thanks for the info.;)I'll have to see what income tax season is like this year. I want to get a TC Omega and maybe a 17FB. Maybe the Omega this year and the 17FB next year. I think I need a raise.:D

17 Rem

Hi here is some interesting reading on the 17 Rem. I had heard a lot of cons and myths on all 17 calibre rifles. After reading this article, I went out and found a Remington 700 Classic Deluxe in 17 rem. Once I get it rolling, I'll let you know if these two guys from the article are full of s**t or not.

Why are you worried about the availability of .17FB brass? Run (properly lubed) virgin .221FB brass into your size die. I'd be very surprised if you had a 2% failure rate.
And you'd be able to form a 'false shoulder' to make sure the brass was held tight against the bolt face for the initial firing.
