.17 rem VS .22mag

The 17 Rem is a center fire and will work very well out to about 300 yards on fox and racoons. I don't think the 22 mag being a rim fire will compete.

what would be the the better choice for hunting fox and racoons out to 200 yards.
thanks

I've never had a 17REM but have owned several 22MAGS and if I was going to shoot 200 yrds I would be looking for something else. The newer hyper velocity 22mag cartridges are better than the originals for distance, but in my opinion I would say at 150 yrds max. (hunting). 22 hornet would be my 1st choice. check out the ballistics I think you might agree. Good luck

I shoot a lot of 22mag and honestly it is not a 200 yard rifle. 125 yards max for hunting anything larger then groundhogs and crows

Step up to a center fire rifle

No Comparison at that distance. 17 Rem hands down. But be forewarned, those sleek little pencil bullets are addictive. Nothing quite like a 25gr pill coming out of a barrel at 4000fps...

Except a 220 Swift with a 40gr pill at 4300fps. Fouls less too.

The 17 Hornet might be an option to look at but the rifles will probably be hard to get for the first while.

I thought the question was,

".17 rem VS .22mag. What would be the the better choice for hunting fox and racoons out to 200 yards?"

17 Remington all the way. Shoots as flat as a .220 Swift to 300 yds, but with much less recoil. In fact, so little recoil, you can touch off a round and see the results through the scope. I shot a Coyote with one 15 years ago about 100yds away, one shot into the chest from the front and he dropped dead. All the damage was internal, could barely tell where the bullet entered.

I will caution you though. Almost all (99%) of the bad press the 17 Rem has received over the years has been due to owners using the horrible Remington factory ammo. After 5 rounds the bore was streaked with more copper fouling than I've seen from any bullet then or since. After that I used the Hornady 25gr HP's with IMR 4320 powder. No troubles, and little fouling, even after shooting 80 rounds in a gopher field one afternoon. Stick with good bullets and the fouling issues are no worse than any other varmint caliber.
