anyone try one? Remington SPS in 17 fireball looks good. Got border of the RIM FIRE, need something in Center fire. Was looking a the 204ruger but I like the fireball:)

A few that I know shoot the 17 Fireball. Good reviews other than cannot get reloads to shoot better than factory fodder. .3 groups not uncommon with custom rifles using factory stuff. The Fireball also does not blow up prairie dog sized game as well as the 20's and 22 centre fires. Wind also wreaks havock on 17's.

.17 fireball isn't terribly wind sensitive. It's not perfect, but it's far from unusable. It's a really nice round, and quite efficient, considering the bore.

.17 remington is pretty hot too, bullet deflection is only a couple inches out to a couple hundred yards, but the tradeoff is that it's not as efficient as the fireball.

And just how many 17's have you shot?:jerkit:

I don't know how they perform on prairie dogs--they are fairly scarce around here :) but the 17 fireball does a nice job on gophers and crows. I generally shoot at ranges under 200 yards and have not found the wind to be a big issue. I like it for my "walking around" rifle--I shoot it out of an M-7 predator rifle. It does not seem to foul the barrel as badly as the .17 rem.

FWIW, 44Bore

yep hard to find but thats why we reload:D One store had but they sold the whole box to him..not a box of 20 I think there are 20 boxes in the whole box:confused:

I've got one in a SPS Varmint and really enjoy shooting it, the rifle is accurate out of the box and is capable of 1" groups at 300yds with handloads. I don't find it is any more wind sensitive than my 222 or 223. Some of the drawbacks is after 225yds it loses alot of energy and doesn't splat gophers real well, they just fall over and brass is expensive and sometimes hard to find. I think a 20 VarTarg would be real nice and maybe Remington will call it a 20 Fireball and start to offer it.

I much prefer the 204. Though I've never had a 17FB, I have had a 17 Rem. And the 204 outperforms it in every way that matters. Increased splatter factor (past 100 yards or so, the 17 isn't very spectacular), less wind drift, and better component availability. It also offers comparable velocities and an equally flat trajectory, with recoil mild enough to allow you to 'see the show.'
