Savage supposedly will be the first to release a rifle for this caliber.

Waddya think? Over or under a buck a shot for ammo? Going by the buzzwords plastered on the box, over.

Big "Meh", here. Don't see this one running long in the marketplace. But maybe they made the case small enough that a ream-out and some work ti ut the firing pin where it should be, will get ya into something that can be reloaded.

.17 Ackley Hornet or an Ackley Bee, for a light duty re-loadable pick.

Cheers

If the cost of ammunition is close to the 17HMR, then the 17HMR sales will fall off dramatically. If the cost of ammunition is comparable to the Hornet rounds, then the new rimfire will fail miserably.

I can see fail all over this! I had a 17HMR and they are just to exspensive to shoot in my books and a lot of my friends feel the same. I do have a 22WMR and that don't get shot alot and if I need the extra pwer over the .22LR out comes the .223 and that will get the job done for not a lot more cost. JMHO

I am thoroughly disappointed... A .25 caliber high-velocity/magnum rimfire would've been the ticket.

I envisioned ~40gr plated bullets @ 3000 FPS, and/or ~45gr @ 2500 FPS...

:(

I still want one of everything..so yeah, I'd like a rifle chambered in this round to play with. BUT, I'm starting to re-load for my .223 and it's changing my outlook on over-priced rimfire ammo. This makes it the third .17 rimfire available and with most people complaining about HMR ammo costs, I wonder how this round could expect great commercial success....?

I feel the same way. I'd buy a firearm chambered in .17 caliber if the ammunition cost was closer to .22.

When i first heard abotu a new rimfire calibre, i was totally stoked. I was thinking somethign along the lines of a 30 calibre (like a rimfire 30 carbine) that would shoot 80 grainers at 2400. This .17 "SUPER MAGNUM" is filling a niche that doesn't exist.

You fellows only shoot inexpensive rifles and " cheap " ammo in all of your guns? Some of you fellows must be waterfowlers $17 for 25 shots, are there a lot of vermin targets in NS where you would shoot a brick of 17HMR in one day?
Does the gol darn rifle industry have cater to what you guys can afford? FS

Bull's EYE stop drooling over the next rim fire time to move up to a center fire LOL

Got ya, thanks. Did some reading and it is based on a .27 case that Winchester uses when it manufacuter them for nail gun use.

That makes more sense, if that is the case.

Trying to stand up a product that does not already have a supply stream (ie: new size bullets, or new size brass) seems a bit of a stretch as far as likelihoods go.
If this flops, they have a stream to route their tooling and components back into. Not a huge risk to try o sell to the board of directors.

I could have seen maybe a .20 cal, as the .204 Ruger is already out there and there are a fair few sources for bullets in different shapes and sizes. That would have been good for the 5mm Rem owners too, maybe.

Yeah Fassteel, price is a factor. I was pretty hot for the .17Mach2, until the price of ammo came out to be what it was. I shoot .22 for cheap, I can reload .223 for performance. Or reload a .22 Hornet, or, well, lots of other choices.
If I want to be really cheap, I can reload a Hornet or the .223 with cast bullets and blast away with them. I feel pretty sure, that the majority of the shooters out there, have never bought a box of .22LR that they spent ten bucks or more upon.

I see this as becoming yet another orphan in a couple years. If they at least build the a decent rifle for them, along the lines of what Remington did with their 5mm rifles, at least they will be decent donors for building available calibers upon. Not likely, though. Looks like Savage bolt guns and break-open singles from NEF or the like.

I do like the looks of that Low Wall in the link posted though.

So, color me skeptical. I don't see this as being worth a trip to the gun counter to look at one.

The guys that were drooling over the prospect of a higher performance rimfire semi auto, with high cap magazines,I think can pretty much forget about that, given the experiences many outfits had with recalls on the .17 cal semi's in the past. I doubt the mainstream makers would risk that.

That sounds like something I would have said not all that long ago. :) I guess I don't disagree with the sentiment, except to say that I think it's less about ammo cost...and more about the diminishing returns as rimfire ammo creeps up to, and beyond centerfire costs. Not so say it doesn't have it's place, but I would have thought that with the 17 options out there already, Winchester might have been smarter (as others have pointed out) to go with something in the .20-.204 range. Timing of this, so close to the release of 17 Hornet also sort of dilutes the excitement a bit. The more options, the better I suppose...but with the Winchester rimfire ammo I've used in the past...I wouldn't have high hopes for quality/consistency in this new offering.
