.17 vs .22 - advice please...

17 HM2! Can't shoot quite as far as a 17HMR, but still good out to about 150 yds.

It is NOT a dying caliber, ammo is readily available, and is half the price (give or take) of HMR.

My little 10-17 almost has the same POI at 100yds as it does at 50yds, and man is it fun fixing gophers with this little round! Last time we went out, after about an hour, it was so hard to keep on target.... we were laughing so hard we could hit anything any more! It sure does a good job of putting them down though, and on some occasions it explodes them quite nicely!

Just my opinion tho...

Gun Nutters, thanks for all the info and advice on both rounds. It's great to hear the pros and cons of each with only mild difference of opinions on some points. I sure as hell didn't want to still up a sh!t show. Cheers, again...I think I may have to get both...but I'd still like to know where the one Nutter said you can find .17 HMR for less than $10!!

2 feet? A blind deaf gopher? Already shot by someone else? Or did you put your barrel down the gopher hole?
:)

Think you need to come to the gopher shoot. Last year most of my shots were 2 feet - 50 yards. But gotta find a spot with that many in it is the thing.

When you park the truck and they are standing 2 feet from the door or you open the door get out and they are by the rear bumper of the truck. I think the farthest I hit a gopher last year was 50 yards. A 223rem at 10 feet is pretty amazing btw.

You baiting them with Zagnuts?

Buy what you can afford to feed.
When I say buy what you can afford , take into consideration ammo availability as well.
I am not questioning where you work or how much money you make.
I know of a few people who are worth 6 digits in their stock portfolio and absolutelly hate to spend $2.59 on a box of .22 but will drop 2k on a penny stock and when it doubles snivel that it didn't triple... take that for what it is.
Me, I would go with a .22, .17HMR, .22Mag and last but not least.17MachII.
Your Results Will vary.

I did quite a bit of hare hunting up here in Northern On a few years back. All I had was a .22LR semi. Put some decent glass on it and by the end of 2 seasons I could make CONSISTANT hits to 125 yards. 3 bunnies high...2.5 bunnies into the wind etc...bang...long wait...thump. Could even hear where I hit. Chest had a distinct sound compared to guts. Past 60 yards wind drift was ALWAYS an issue with any wind at all. Holdover was consistant based on distance and therefore the easiest to judge.

Last year I bought a 17HMR Savage. Should have bought on years ago. 125 yards...NO holdover. Wind drift is considerably less than my 22LR...and about the same as my .22Mag. No wait from bang to hit, and watch in the scope. Now the game isn't to see if I can make clean hits....but rather If I can make headshots at 125.

Haven't shot anything large yet...but judging by depth and volume of wounds so far, I wouldn't hesitate to take fox or groundhogs.

To go with above comments.

Seriously? There's no need for that.

I'm sorry???

The original poster asked a question and the effectiveness of the .17 came into question. I was merely providing information as to the kind of wound that could be expected at a longer range(100 yards) so that the OP could make an informed decision on effectiveness on the game at ranges he intends to shoot. When seeking knowledge I love having as much info as possible. I thought this was a knowledge and info sharing site and don't mean to offend the sensitivities of others.

You're not offending my sensibilities. Put a hotlink to the image or something, saying "click here to see the results of a brainshot". That picture is NSFW.

Why are people on internet forums at work anyway. You are at work to work not use forums about firearms and facebook.

Nice headshot btw

Unless you're my boss, STFU. If you are my boss, I was researching that issue you asked about sir.
