Hi,

long story short, it's my second B Mag, trying to get a refund for the first one was a total disaster... no question they ship me another B-#####...:mad::mad::mad:

anyone try to shoot coyote with the .17 wsm? what range? is it good for 200 yards? how long they run after a good vital hit?
i really want to know if i put time and money to get this one to shoot good ( boyds stock, bedding...) or i just sell it, loosing money and then buy a more appropriate caliber? :kickInTheNuts:

opinion/experience are welcome!

I have killed probably close to a dozen or more yotes with my .17 HMR not WSM. I am comfortable out to about 150 yards with mine with weather conditions taken into account. Not sure if that helps or not.

Cheers!

it help a bit... are you aiming for the head? Vitals? Did they run? how long?

Thank you for taking the time answering !

Yotes?....with a .17...? Probably not with a single shot at 150yards. Not really humane. IMHO

You'd have to be damn good or damn lucky. Center fire at those ranges would be more humane....and appropriate.

when .17 hmr first came out I shot 12-15 coyotes with it. Results varied from dead right there to them running a long way wounded. I quit using the 17 hmr for coyotes and went on to bigger and better things. I think the 17 wsm would be a lot better though. I just wish they made a bullet that wasn't a thin skinned varmint bullet and also not an fmj. If they had something similar to a partition or even a mono-metal bullet I would be much more inclined to buy one.

Check out the wesite Varminter.com for info on the .17WSM and coyotes. There are a couple of good articles, and I am sure you will be using your Bmag on 'yotes. I know mine will be used, but with 25 grain shells. I guess I got a good one, shooting 1" at 100 yds.

My son and I have taken a dozen or so with HMR's... out to about 125 yards, using the 20 grain XTP bullets... on lung hits, they all ran but under 50 yards with a good blood trail... none were lost.

I have used my hmr plenty. Works excellent. I have personally had easy kills to 125 with it. I prefer head shots, accounting for probably 70% of my kills with it. I have the WSM, I have no doubt with it to at least 150. I will be trying to take closer however. Most of my kills with the hmr have been under 80 yards.

I would stick to head shots... Too light for my personal tastes for a body shot, even at those close ranges. IMO of course.

I have a tendency to take them at 350-400m with a 22-250, 50g handload. Flop over dead. At 150 there is not much pelt on the exit side!

I have the 17 wsm bmag i shot one coyote with it at 122 yards right behind shoulders it spun around once then dropped. With there 25 grain bullets i thought it worked great but shot placment is key . I hit one far back with a 204 ruger and ran a ways .

For us 100-200 yards = K-Hornet, over 200 is .223 and over 300 is .243 country...

An HMR or WSM "can" get it done, we have done it, but really is on the bottom end of reasonable... keep it under 125 yards or so... use heavier bullet weights (HMR - 20 XTP, 25+ WSM) and center the lungs on a broadside animal... I would not take long shots or frontal/shoulder shots with these cartridges.

can I ask what you base this on .please enlighten us .how many have you shot with it how much testing have you done .how good of a shot are you ,can you estimate distance .have you taken yotes with other cals to compare .thanks Dutch

Never lost a coyote with an hmr and have taken around 20. All but one were chest shots with 17 gr bullets, one head shot. Never had any run out of sight before dropping dead. Lots of spinners, some took a second shot but probably not needed. I won't shoot past 100 yards. If your hunting for fur you can't get much better results.
