.17 WSM makes/models - present/future

I've had my WSM out when a friend had his HMR out, you can notice the difference hearing the two firing beside each other, but if you don't hear them in comparison, like if you walked up to someone while they were shooting an HMR or WSM you probably wouldn't recognize which was which without a lot of time around the two rifles.

Franklin Armory makes the AR17 which is another manufacturer of the 17 WSM as well, though you'd have to get irunguns or prophet river to bring it up for you.

I'm happy with my Bmag as well, though it's been modified beyond recognition

Great. Thanks for the reply.

Stubblejumper I feel your pain. Sounds like you may like the 17s as well. Love my Mach 2s as well. My favorite gopher recipe. But I would still try the WSM just because. Tempted to try a B mag with bull barrel. But still holding off. Ruger too expensive and have heard Low walls are not good shooters. So Ruger $1000 and Win $1300 plus. No thanks. Should shoot one hole groups for that money. Maybe ammo issues? Jury still out in my mind.

Thought of maybe doing an H&R conversion if I could find a builder. But am in no rush.

How simple would a rifle conversion be with the rim being in a different location as compared to the HMR or WMR?? Would the firing pin have to be moved??

Amo I am not sure on that. I don't think so. There is lots of good information on Graybeard Outdoors and Rimfirecentral. I was hoping that it would be a simple ream job but not sure at this time.

It would be difficult for a few reasons, first of all the mag won't fit WSM ammo, second the brass is thicker on the WSM so the firing pin has to hit harder, from what I can tell all of the actions made for the WSM were created for that round (not sure about the Winchester) and not just adapted from other modern rimfires

One thing that in my opinion might help the 17 WSM is the relative low cost of the ammo. From the limited selection that I've seen, 17 WSM is not much higher cost than 17 HMR (+$4 for 50 rounds) and significantly lower than factory 17 Hornet.

But I can still load 17Hornet cheaper, and the ballistics are superior.

Ya, if you reload that makes more sense, to me the advantage to the WSM would be unlimited magazine capacity for semi autos, but no one is making a semi with 17 WSM with large capacity mags so I guess that's a moot point (not considering the Franklin Armory AR17 as it is hard to get and only has 15 round mags)
