Looking through the Cabelas flyer I saw a savage rifle in the new .17 WSM. I thought "meh" then I got looking at the ballistics. 20 grain bullet at 3000 fps from ammo that costs the same as the HMR. The HMR may be in trouble! Anybody have one? If so is it all that it's cracked up to be? It does seem to be a significant improvement.

sorry if this ha been brought up before. I did a search and couldn't find much. G

I saw that too, but how long will ammo stay the same price?? I think because its a winchester made round and not hornady price will be a bit cheaper. Im considering making the switch but i'm still not 100% sure about it. Ill give it a year or so to die down and see if its going to be around for awhile yet

In order to compete with the 17HMR, there will need to be some quality rifles built for the new cartridge, and the manufacturer, will need to provide high quality ammunition. Whether or not that happens, will be a huge factor in whether the new cartridge survives. Myself, I wouldn't bother with either, the 17Hornet can be loaded for about the same price, and the ballistics are far superior, to either of the rimfires.

I'll add one to the gun room as soon as someone besides Savage makes a decent bolt rifle in it........like say a Browning T bolt like my 22 mag and 17 HMR. Possibly a CZ...........

Which may not happen soon as they would have to design a completely new action just for that cartridge. This is the biggest hurdle the 17 WSM will face. It may work in the Ruger 77/17 series of rifle with some tweaks, will have to see what Shot 2014 brings.

I hear ya, but it would work on any action used for a hornet so hopefully CZ may bring one out and Ruger could make it work in their hornet action. Barring that I may just take a Ruger or CZ and make my own...........

I was at the Buffalo Gun Center a few weeks ago and noticed they had 25-30 boxes of .17 WSM ammo on the shelf. I asked if they had a rifle (Savage) I could have a look at. The guy behind the counter said that as soon as they get several of the Savage B-Mag's in, they are sold in a day or two! He said that he wished he could get more in as there is a strong demand for them.

The ballistics of the new round are impressive when compared to the .17 HMR.
However, as mentioned above, if one reloads, the cost of my .223 reloads are much less than the .17 WSM and the .17 HMR, plus the performance, range, etc. of the .223 are much better.
But my Savage 12 LRPV is a bit on the heavy side to carry in the bush, I'm thinking the Savage B-Mag may be alot easier to carry, so it may have an edge there.

I am going to get a chance to shoot a Savage B-Mag in a few weeks. Who knows, I may just add a .17 WSM to the safe to keep my .17 HMR company!
I'm kind of hoping Savage come out with an upgrade option or two for the B-Mag, an upgraded stock option would be nice.

I've read the Savage B-mag in 17wsm was have accuracy issues...not sure if its been sorted out yet. Also I seem to remember reading a year ago that cz was also suppose to release a 17wsm rifle...haven't followed up so not sure what has happened.
It should be a decent enough of a cartridge though.

The ballistics sound impressive.. but so far I cant even find a Savage in this cal. Would prefer a wood stock to the blk synthetic that Savage has released. Ammo isnt exactly readily available either. Hopefully more options available by next spring/summer.

When I herd about the 17wsm I got excited about it. The fact that Win. does big sales in nail gun ammo and the cartridge is based on one of their nail gun rounds, makes me think that ammo will never dry up.

When i saw the Savage BMAG rifle I though it looked like an interesting gun and was all about waiting to get one.

Then I happened upon a CZ 527 LUX in .222 and bought it. Now I am not sure I really need the .17. But that hasn't stopped me from buying a rifle before.

What I herd about BMAG test shooting was that the shooter figured the ammo still had some bugs to work out and the lack of accuracy was not the fault of the gun.

I recon the sales people like the idea of 3,000 FPS and would not want to loose that number for the sake of a more accurate load. For coyotes I wouldn't mind seeing a heavier bullet, long and lean.

I'm very excited on the .17 wsm.... im just waiting until there are a couple more offerings in rifle and stock options. I do like the bmag, but it would be nice to see it in a nice hardwood or laminate stock

An Email to some of the manufacturers may get some info. I would find it hard to believe that other manufacturers aren't going to jump on this one. Especially if savage is selling out. Time will tell.

Its not quite selling out, its just not available, talking to a guy today was saying out west they are distributing a few of them, but the price was $399.99 + tx + shipping. Who knows maybe cz will be on board sooner then we think.

I have to think that the ammo should stay relatively cheap as the building construction trade uses the 17wsm parrent case and the 17hmr and 17 rem use the projectiles.

The guns chambered in the cartridge will determine the life span.
