Hi, new here. I have been an avid varmint shooter since Bruce Springsteen had hair and a real job. I have always gravitated to playing with small bore center fire wild cats - recently I bought a Savage stainless target in .17 WSM rimfire and put an old 10X leo turret AO on it - At the range it out shot my Martini cub in .17 Hornet - so I have been using the .17 in the varmint fields all summer as a close range (under 300 meters) on crows G hogs and ground squirrels.

I want to here from anyone who is currently using this swift little rim fire for similar shooting - like to hear your experiences and opinions of it.

Cheers

I was intrigued by the ballistics, but not feeling the love for the BMag. I managed to get a Ruger 77/17 in it, and it was horribly inaccurate. I crowned it, bedded it, and it still shot craptacular. I picked up a Boyds PV for it, but have yet to put pillars into it and only shot it once....terrible.

I picked up an SSHB Savage, and right out of the box, it impressed me. I've shot a couple crows, some magpies and a few gophers with it, I love the round. Making hits out close to 200 yards isn't a problem, and some serious smack down there too. I've put a Boyds PV onto my BMag and it is now my go to critter gun at my weekend place.

I have sitting on my desk, a Manson 17 WSM reamer from Bighorn sales, and I've got a Lilja barrel coming for the Ruger. I'm going to rebarrel it with a 24" .920" straight and see if I can get that one to come around, I like the Ruger action and mags much better than the Savage.

Lpel will be along shortly I'm sure with many tales of gopher slaying with his SSHB, I think he is a fan too.

As my good friend Steve has said it is currently my fav of the 17s I own. That being 17 hm2, 17 HMR, 17 Hornet and 17 Fireball. I also have the SSHB. It is by far not the most accurate. But it is devastating on gophers, it is truly minute of gopher.

I like them all and this may be the flavour of the day as it is my newest of them all. That bring said I will always have one in the stable. If someday anyone makes one more accurate than what I have now I will have that one as well. Having said all that I like my bmag.

I have a .17 Rem in a sako vixen action I'm in love with - makes a feather bomb out of a crow at +200 yds and he's dead before he hears the shot that killed him ;-)
