I wouldn't have believed this except I can verify it-I went up to farm where the farmer was having a serious deer problem-he has lost hundreds of dollars in nursery stock plus many hours trying to chase deer away. His 20 acre property is fenced and gated-and still the occasional deer gets in and wreaks havoc with the nursery stock. He is not a hunter and had no rifles but had bought a sub 500 fps .177 pellet rifle for shooting starling, which I sighted in for him.Walking around the property last evening looking for a rabbit ,I spotted a dead deer, which looked like it had been killed within the last 24 hours-but no visable wound.Later back at the house I mentioned I had found the dead deer-and he said he had been out the night before and shot at a deer at about 20 yards with his pellet rifle-and it ran off.The deer had gone about 50 yards from where he said he had shot it and died under the kiwi bushes-I concluded that he had somehow managed to hit the jugular with the pellet and it bled out....but I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself....

Yeah, I could see one of the higher velocity ones (approx. 1000fps) but one of the 495'ers? Impressive. Sure it didn't have a heart attack?:)

I remember there was a calf moose killed with a pellet rifle, hit between ribs, into lung and died a few days latter guy was charged.

But still, I doubt the dead deer you saw was the one shot with a pellet gun. Let's be realistic, I have shot 100's of gophers with sub 500 fps pellet rifles and know the power they have. Your not going to drop a deer in 50 yards with one except on a huge fluke. Hell I have enven been shot a number of times.

And why the hell are you bringing it up? You want the guy to get charged?

Don't ranchers and farmers have rights when animals are eating or stomping on their livelihood? I'm am not condoning the shooting of deer with pellet guns. Seems highly unlikely to me, but I was not there.

If this is a true story it is excellent information for bone heads and DA's that use pellet guns as a toy and shoot at people, something quite common these days. How do you know when a pellet gun is rated at under 500 fps it is a correct rating and at what speed will a pellet not kill or blind someone? It would be useful information if this could be confirmed that the deer was killed by the pellet gun. Thanks.

How is this possible? I hit crows from 10 yards in my yard and they fly away only to caw like crazy and never die. I picked up a pellet gun from Wally world, and its 495... cant even kill a crow with a chest shot from 10 yards with a pointed hunting pellet.
So how does it break the skin of a deer and make it die?

I call Bravo Sierra on this one.

as I said-I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't know first hand what happened-the guy who shot it was about 80 years old, not a hunter and never had a gun.He bought the pellet rifle across the counter, and I sighted it in for him a few weeks ago to shoot starlings and robins that were taking his cherries. He was using standard pointed pellets. The property was fenced and he said he had two deer in there-and had been trying to chase them out the gate, and had shot it with his pellet rifle-so the chances the deer I found was any other deer other than the one he shot at was negligable. There was no visable shot wound, so I concluded he had hit it in the neck and punctured the jugular-without actually doing an autopcy I can think of of no other logical conclusion,as there was no evidence it died from anything else, and it was an otherwise healthy 2 or 3 year old doe.I doubt if it would have punctured the skull, and any other shot that may have killed it would have resulted in a slow death-the deer was beginning to bloat but did not have a smell yet-so I concluded it died within 24 hours-right when he said he had shot it,the evening before and within 50 yards of where he said he had shot at it.If nothing else,it does prove that even sub 500fps pellet rifles can be lethal-they aren't toys.

In the provinces that I have lived in,those rights don't include shooting deer without a tag,out of season, with guns that aren't legal to hunt big game with,or shooting game animals and making no attempt to recover them and salvage the edible meet.

I've been hit a few times when I was a kid with a sub 500, stung like hell and had to get tweezers on occasion to pop out the bb, but it never went in past the skin, I am not saying your a liar, I just find it hard to believe it penetrated a deer hide. Was there any blood ???? if he somehow managed to hit a jugular, you would see evidence of that. I wonder if it was a health issue. It is possible that after being chased and stung by a pellet the deer suffered a heart attack or something.

I'm not lying-and I've given the facts as I know them but admit without actually doing an autopcy I could be mistakean, but the circumstances indicte the deer was killed by a single 177 pointed pellet fired at close range .If this was in fact the case- it was a obviously ''fluke'' shot-and I doubt if anyone could replicate it if they tried-but strange things happen sometimes. This was one of them, and the only ''lesson'' is even a pellet gun can be lethal.I'm sure as heck going to let any one know using even a pellet gun that ALL guns should be treated with respect and safe gun handling applies-even to guns people may ASSUME can't do serious harm.

The deer got hit by a car and ran on to your friends property to die. We have found 2 large bucks one a few weeks ago and one during the spring that looked to have 0 wounds but after a really close look you could tell there were broken ribs.

I have the hide off the one hangin maybe I will shoot it with my pellet gun tomorrow to see if this is plausable.

I highly doubt the pellet killed the deer I have shot squirrels with pellet guns and seen them run away. I also shot a raccoon 10 times with a pellet gun a couple days ago and it didnt even fall out of the tree my dad had to give it a shot with the .22 to end the suffering.
