.177 pellet killed a deer

Last year a kid shot his buddy with a stolen pellet rifle, and killed him Anyone remember that? Long thread on CGN about it. I *think* it was a shot to the chest that went between the ribs.

Weirder #### has happened. Who knows?

Great. Now the kids with pellet guns will think they can take Moose with their toy guns. They know they can because some guy kills deer with his and they are a better shot.

What's next - Paint Ball Guns with frozen pellets?

Sounds like a "perfect storm" scenario where all the stars and planets are in alignment or some such thing.
Definitely weird if true. I would think the deer had probably overeaten in the farm yard and died of some sort of digestive problem and not a pellet moving 300 fps (approx).
Can someone call CSI NY, Miami and LV and make sure that Grissom heads up a thorough investigation of this incident? That way we should have a conclusive cause of death within a 45 minute time span and put this to bed.
:D

perhaps the velocity of the pellet gun is higher than the store thought?
could be 1000fps, and they sold it to him without knowing, or its an old one the guy has had for a long time.

got any pics?

He told me he purchased the pellet rifle over the counter to shoot the starlings, robbins and rabbits that were bothering his fruit trees, just a few weeks ago,and while it could have been more powerful,I doubt it.He said he ''couldn't hit anything with it''-so I sighted it in for him ,and I know he was using pointed pellets because I borrowed it the same evening and shot some rabbits[as I said-this is a nursery and he is plagued by them] ,and that is when I found the dead deer.No-I don't have any pictures-there wasn't much to take a picture of-only a dead doe starting to bloat, which I concluded had died within the last 24 hours[bloating but no overpowering odor yet]

No,there was no visable wound-you wouldn't expect a .177 to make anything more than a puncture wound,I assume the deer bled internally, but it was fairly easy to see what happened-the deer ran about 50 yards under the kiwi trellis's, lay down and expired. If he had hit it in the eye,and the pellet penetrated the brain, the deer would likely have dropped right there, rather than running.

Sure people have a right to be skeptical,I don't blame anybody at all, -but I found the dead deer-asked the old guy if he had shot at a deer with his pellet rifle, and when and where-and it all tallied up-I concluded he had killed it with one shot from his pellet rifle[he didn't tell me he killed the deer-he didn't know he even hit it until I found it dead a short distance away from where he said he had shot at it].

Maybe if this account serves to make people aware that even a fluke shot from low powered pellet rifle can be lethal it will be worth the discussion .No I'm not promoting pellet rifles as a viable replacement of the venerable''underpowered''30/30,but any of us who have hunted for any length of time know weird stuff can-and does - happen. There's a diference between ''possable'' and ''probable''and thats how ''accidents''happen-from people not thinking something can happen.I'll sure be telling my kids -or any kids, that pellet rifles have to be treated like any other firearm

Yea I remember, I concluded both kids were idiots.

Couldn't a vet or someone do an autopsy? Say your worried it may have been diseased or something. If they ask about a pellet inside of it, play dumb.

It could have died from natural causes and it's all a coincidence. If you believe in those.

Yes, let's take up a collection to pay a vet to perform the autopsy to settle this dispute once and for all. My uncle is a vet in Calgary, if you ship him the deer, maybe I can get a discount......

I am personally a little less sceptical about this. I believe that the pellet may have killed this deer. If it penetrated the hide, and hit a major artery or even a lung, that deer could easily have bled to death internally. If it was not pursued after the shot, it would only go a short distance and lay down. When I was young, we had an acquaintance who had two bad-a** sons, who poached deer with 22 SV shorts. One of them told me that a short in the ribs, even at 75-80 yards and the deer would walk a short distance, lay down and be dead in ½ hour. Now I agree, even a standard velocity short at 75 yards is a bit more muscular than a .177 pellet at 20 yards, but stranger things have occurred. Without an autopsy, the complete truth will never be known, but I would not be surprised if it was that pellet that killed the deer. Regards, Eagleye.

How is this possible? I hit crows from 10 yards in my yard and they fly away only to caw like crazy and never die. I picked up a pellet gun from Wally world, and its 495... cant even kill a crow with a chest shot from 10 yards with a pointed hunting pellet.
So how does it break the skin of a deer and make it die?

I call Bravo Sierra on this one.

i guess u need a real pellet gun then:D

my crosman 150 co2 .22 pistol hits hard enough to hear the smack of the pellet hitting crows at 40-50 yards with the odd pass through. this thing is from the 50's i believe so i have no clue how fast it is. all i know is it sure works great on everything up to coons via head shots. ill take it with me deer hunting this fall and when i bag one, ill shoot it with the pellet gun for penetration tests:sniper:

I also shot a raccoon 10 times with a pellet gun a couple days ago and it didnt even fall out of the tree my dad had to give it a shot with the .22 to end the suffering.

Raccoons are tricky buggers...they've been known to absorb plenty of .22's when headshots were not involved.

Heavy suckers, too.

Weird? Yes. Possible? Sure.

I seem to recall that the 500 fps air rifle I had as a kid had no problem dispatching quite a number of squirrels, grouse and snowshoe hares. Sure, it was a head-shot-only proposition, and the range had to be kept quite close. But I do clearly remember being 12 or 13 years old and struggling up the hill with my airgun on my shoulder and over a dozen rabbits on my toboggan.

While freakish, it's certainly possible.

My Webely tempest pellet pistol .177 one shot blows through tin cans at 20m (with good ammo). I had to have a pellet cut outta my ass when a buddy shot me back in highschool.

projectiles are very dangerous...always use with the utmost care
