I was wondering if anyone has had any success with the 178 amax out of a 308 win.at longrange 600 to a 1000?it seems that we only here alot about berger, sierra and lapua these days and i was curious why hornady does not seem to be getting on the podium?curius of your thoughts?

I used the with great success in a Tikka Tactical using BL-C2 powder. I found that when kissing the lands they were extremely accurate and I was able to achieve 2750 no problem. I used to shoot long range with them for fun, and if I was going to play with a 308 bolt guna again, they would the bullet I would reach for.

I too have had great luck out to 1000 yds and a bit beyond - using my .308 Remington 700 LTR (20" barrel), and the 178 Amax.

Believe it or not, the 168 Amax were pretty much as good as the 178's on the days we were shooting. Maybe there was minimal wind(!?) but they both performed the same. Having said that, there is no doubt the 178's would hit a bit harder at that distance.

One of the reasons i am asking is with the new rule which has came out in the f/tr i am wondering to go heavy or not?and we have to keep our eyes open for the guys playing with the 223 and the 90 grain bullets and from my experience i have never seen hornady on the podium with the gold medal.

I couldn't get them to shoot quite as well as the 175 MK in any of the rifles I tried them in. They were better in the wind but wouldn't group as well as the Sierras. Regards, Bill

They are somewhat enigmatic from my experience, because generally, I have not found many Amax bullets to be superlative. The 178's are my one and only exception.

I used to shoot the AMAX 168's. They were great. I switched bullets because I couldn't seem to find them anymore. Tons of moly coated around, but I hate handling that stuff. So I'm using 175 sierra's and 168 bergers now.
