I am finishing a project I started a bit ago. It is Martini 12/15 action ai bought on gunnutz, the wood is a piece from the standard walnut pile at Windsor Plywood, the Barrel was a TC contender carbine barrel in 17 HM2, the rings are Weaver Grand Slam and it is a small Leupold Rimfire scope. I still have lots of coats of oil to put on the stock but after I casehardened it this weekend I wanted toput it together and check it out. I think I will checker the stock as well.

Wow! That is nice... what a gorgeous squirrel rifle... that would be a tremendous rifle crooked in your arm while strolling the beech ridges... well done!

That is real nice, I have never tried case hardening.
With that nice of wood, I don't know if I would checker or not, but looks like you know what you are doing. Great job.
I have some walnut, but don't look that good .

Thanks, my parents ranch in SW Sask and I am looking forward to trying out on gophers this spring. It has been tooooo cold to even take it to the range and try it out. Maybe in a couple of weeks.

Almost asked if a sling swivel stud (for a bipod) is in the plans...? About the only thing I think I'd change if I was planning on gophering. Would one of those be a sin on such a nice rifle? lol Maybe?

Ground squirrels = mud wrestling

Tree squirrels = billiards in tuxedos

Your rifle belongs in the beech and oak groves... perhaps not with the tuxedo...

Mud wrestling=lol I think ground squirrels deserve more respect than that Hoyt. I hear some people even fly across the country to shoot those. :) The rancher who owns most of the land I shoot on keeps a very nice, SAKO rifle in the back of his truck with a Leupold scope on it. Guess what he uses that thing for? :)

Anyhow, yes...it's a very fine looking 17M2...and even I would be reluctant to spend a week in a gopher patch with it. Not because of what I'm likely to be laying in, more because of the amount of dust the non-stop wind delivers.

I machined a sling stud to replace the forward forend screw. Thanks for the suggestion, this bipod will be handy on a shooting bench.

I am not sure how much of a pain loading will be yet, I may have to buy extra high scope rings to give extra height. The shells slid in easily and pop out on ejection but I haven't been to the range to test fire it yet, we will see.
