.17HM2/Mach2

The 17 HMR is much more popular than the 17 M2. I considered both a few years ago when I first started looking. I settled on the 17M2 and I have not regretted that decision. If you look at the ballistics the Mach 2 does not give up very much to its "bigger brother" but it really does save a lot in costs, especially if like me you shoot upwards of 500 rounds in a weekend. Personally I would not have a 17 HMR. The smaller round will kill gophers a long way away and they are just as accurate, perhaps even more so. You may have to look around to find an ammo supplier, so once you do buy lots! My rifle did not like the Eley/Remington round but the Hornady brand shoots very accurately indeed. My rifle is probably unique, it is a rebarrelled (by Rob McLennan) Browning A-Bolt 22 and by far and away is my favourite rifle. I would not recommend getting an auto loader (in either calibre) unless you have very deep pockets!

If the 17M2 suddenly became obsolete and a $200.00 gun became a paperweight, how many here would consider that the end of their inexpensive little world?

Seriously, buy one, have some fun, and who cares what the future brings with the 17M2. It's here now.

You know, knitting is a very inexpensive hobby..........

You only need fire three bricks of 17mach2 to save the price of a $200 gun vs the 17HMR.If you have already saved the price of the gun,you aren't losing any money if there was suddenly no more 17mach2 ammunition.

Once you've fired the M2-you'll become a believer. Grab some brics from Clay at Prophit River and get that new M2 rifle and you'll never look back. After witnessing mine dad had to get one too....much to the gophers regret-and my HMR is gone now-too expensive to shoot and the M2 did everything it could except for the extra 50 metres in range..:stirthepot2:

For the Doomsayers who are predicting the imminent downfall of the HM2:

Worst case senario is to rebarrel your 17 HM2 to .22 long rifle. Only a barrel is needed, and could be installed at the factory, as almost all 17 HM2 rifles have a twin brother in the Manufacturers stable in .22 L.R.

That is what I would do with my Cooper, but the cost of rebarreling a $200 rifle, would likely be more than the gun is worth when you add in shipping and labor.
