.17hmr barrel length

No such thing... different ammo lots, different barrels, different actions etc... to many parameters to generalize... I wouldn't get to caught up in the velocity of rimfire rounds... concentrate on accuracy... I chopped all of my hummers and machs to the minimum 18" (+ 1/4" to be safe)... I prefer the balance and handling better at the shorter length... I tested them all before and after, all five of the hummers were MORE accurate after the chop (more likely due to the new crown)... the 4-6" of lost barrel length did nothing except improve handling... on one Mach2 I did have to tweak and recrown three times to bring back the accuracy (I was glad that I left it long)... I figured I just caught a bad node... in short, if you prefer a shorter length then go for it. I don't regret it one bit.

Thanks for the pics! I just bought my first hmr, a marlin 917 stainless synthetic. But it shoots so so, i'm not happy enough with it. I'm trying to decide if I should recrown it or bed the stock or just sell it and buy another one. I know 3 guys that have Savages and they all shoot great and all have magazine trouble. What about the accuracy of Mossberg?

My friend has a savage that had the mag trouble, Savage sent him a new one, he fixed the other one with a pair of pliers, now has 2 working mags. His shoots great as well. CZ is also very good.

The Savage "mag" problem, is not really a problem... it takes about 15 seconds to correct... only had to do it to one mag of the dozens that I have... OP, the most accurate Hummer that I have ever seen was a Marlin 917 Thumbhole... my neighbor has it... I have shot and seen countless five shot groups at 100 yards with all bullet holes overlapping. My Savage and CZ's are good too, just not as consistently good as that one. Is yours new??? put at least 10 boxes through it before you get too concerned about accuracy... try Hornady 17 VM and 20 XTP... My CZ's prefer the 17 grainers and the Savages prefer the 20 grainers... you will have to try yours out to see.

Ya it's new. What part did you tweek for the savage mags? I've got about 100 rounds down it, so I'll shoot a little more then.

On some mags the retention flanges... bent wings that the bullets seat under, are too tight and just need to be opened slightly... I have gotten into the habit of also buffing all my mags (not just Savage) with emery paper to remove burrs and rough edges... this improves feed function.

Savage.. Marlin.. Mossberg...

But no love for the CZ's?!

I've got a CZ 455 Lux in 17HMR and it's fantastic. Quarter sized groups at 100 yards. I did put a yodave trigger kit in it, it's now about a 2.5lb pull with no slack and breaks cleanly, best $18 you can spend on a CZ452/455.

I'll also challenge the Savages, Marlins, and Mossbergs to meet or beat the fit/finish of the CZ's!
