I am picking up a Sako Quad in .17hmr and I am wondering what kind of scope to put on it. magnification wise. I have never shot a .17 b4 and would like some input. I am aware of the burris? quad scope but I was wondering about different options and what guys are running. not sure how far out these things can reach and I dont want to purchase an underpowered scope.

Thanks for the input in advance! Anyone know what spare mags are worth and where I can get them as well?

The last scope I had on my HMR was a 12x, and soon after I mounted it...I felt it was a little under powered. I'd suggest something in the 14x-16x range on the high end if you're reaching-out there on small targets.

I went with a 6.5-20 SII Sightron and am glad that I did.

You will be shooting at small targets and that magnification is very nice. Also very beneficial to see your groups through your shooting scope during practice.

If you are going to shoot paper for groups at all, you will want more like 24X on the top end... I have BSA 6-24X40mm SF MD Contender's on a couple and Hawke Varmint SF 6-24X44mm on a couple others... I tried 4-16X, but even they were underpowered... the Hawke Varmint SF 6-24 is my favorite Hummer scope for the money, with a really nice Fine 1/2 mil-dot reticle that is fantastic for rimfire holdover... it is bright and clear also with side adjustable AO... you would not regret one.

A Burris Fullfield II 3-9x40 with the Ballistic Plex Reticle works great if you plan to hunt like I do with it...set mine up for Fox and Crows.

Zeroed at 50yds; increments worked out to be 50-100, 150, 200, 250 pretty much bang on with 17gr V-Max out to 250.

Something with a full Mil-dot reticle and more magnification will be better for target shooting and judging hold on Prairie Dogs in windy conditions though.

Where do you pick up a Hawke?

I have a tasco 4x16x40 on my savage R17 BSEV right now, and im hating it.... :-( At this point im tired of the cheaper scopes, and am looking at a Zeiss Conquest 6.5x20x50. I dunno, maybe i should also look at the much more reasonably priced ones shown up above before (semi) breaking the bank!

I've heard the Hawke Varmint SF are pretty clear scopes, plan on taking a chance on one very soon actually. As for the 24x magnification range~not a fan myself for hunting. With a scope ramped-up that high, it really amplifies even the smallest movement on the shooters part. I once experimented with a 32x scope on an HMR, and even my heartbeat caused the crosshairs to bounce right off the small targets at 150 yards! Anyhow, I have a 16x scope on my .223 and feel like it's plenty on that gun...and it has WAY more reach than an HMR. Anyhow, my last scope purchase was a Mueller APT for my .22WMR and I'd honestly have little temptation using one on an HMR. Nice, clear glass, mildot reticle, good price, etc.

All i have is the Tasco 2.5-10x42mm varminter and i wouldnt want anything more. I was shootin gophers today and my longest shot was 85 yards and shortest was 8 yards. That scope will do it all and wont break your wallet. Ive got mine mounted on my savage 93r17 fv

Where were you shooting today? Havent seen any up north of saskatoon

10-12X is plenty for a 17. You can see gopher heads as far as you can shoot. Not saying a bit more would be wasted, I don't think you really gain much with a 24X.

Thanks for the input thus far boys.

I was thinking possibly something leupold. Im also a fan of sightron. I have a 8-32x56 lr moa on a savage 10ba and it is incredibly clear and I love the crosshairs. a little much for a 17 but they prob have a smaller option. Too big of a bell on it and it would be sitting up pretty high id imagine.

Anyone own a sako quad, what scope are you running on them?

I have a Sako Quad, one of the best rifles I,ll ever own. Tried the Burris scope designed for it. Not exactly junk, but the optics were poor. Put on a Swarovski 3x9x40. Requires some re-zeroing when swapping barrels, no big deal. For the money spent on such a high quality piece of gear go with the best scope you can. I have made many bait piles from frozen gophers.
