I've decided that for my new rimfire I will be getting a Savage 93 bolt-action rifle, I'm leaning towards the 93FVSS but can't decide between that and the 93R17. I will use it mostly for small game and varmint hunting, mostly for jackrabbits/cottontails and crows/gophers. Because I will be using it for alot of jackrabbit hunting, I was thinking that the .22 win. mag. would be a better choice due to larger bullets and more energy, although with the .17HMR I would be able to extend my range and have flatter trajectory. I can't decide, can anyone help?:runaway:

Go for the 22 mag. I used to hunt coons with one of them, and the performance is spectacular. I'm not sure that i would want to be shooting a coon with the 17. They work great on jacks too.

Yes this dead horse can be beat no more that once a month, since this has been disscussed so recently the word is not even "click search" it's "scroll down" :)

No problem we all do it sometimes, got caught the other day myself :(, that said I'd I have had both but prefer hmr, though I think it would shread a cotontail, 17 m2 would make a better edible game round than hmr.

i have own 2 17hmr currently i have a ruger mk77/17 and i love it i have taken yotes rabits crows magpies and millionss of gophers mostly in saskachewan, i would sugest the 17 more acurate longer range i took a yote at 265 yards with a head shot

22mag...

it has a heavier bullet and will buck the wind better. In my eyes the 17 is a fad. People like the explosive power of it but I think that is all there is.

In regards to shooting yotes with a 17 or 22 mag, I do not think they are something that should be shot beyond 100 yards for a ethical kill.:(

The only time wieght is a factor in wind drift is if you are talking about the same caliber, bc then velocity then maybe weight but only if the other 2 are equal

I have had this chart ready for this dead horse too :) The bullets used have about the same BC. but oddly enough the biggest one going the slowest drifted the most.

Though I am not saying that the 17 does not blow around it does. and they both do but stubby bullets going slower will drift more.
