17HMR or 22WMR?

I have no experience with 22 magnum.

17 HMR is awesome, see gopher kill gopher. My brothers and I have been using this round for 10 years. I have a CZ 452 American that has shot thousands of gophers in last ten years. It's very accurate round that makes gopher hunting way more fun. Target shooting is great as well.

There is something about the 'PoP' of a gophers head when it is struck by the .22 WMR.
The .17 has a much more distinct sound when they smack one of them furry lil Buggahs.
The .17 HMR is nothing like the .223 in any way shape or form.
Either one(17HMR or 22 MMR) can on occasion be difficult to source ammo for.
Hell, buy one of each...easy for me to say because it isnt my money but , I have owned each on and am partcial to the CZ line.
Be it a 452 or a 453 or the 455...
Your call.

I own a Savage Mako in 17HMR, recently bought an A17, love them both. Very accurate and do a nice job on whatever little critters you point them at but of the two coyotes I've shot with the 17HMR one took four shots (about 50 yards) to finish and the other one (about 100 yards) ran off into the bush never to be seen again.
I just bought a 22WMR off the EE to give that cartridge a try.

I don't understand why so many on this forum act like we can only own one rifle. You can buy models in these calibers for $500 ish dollars so why not try both then sell the one you don't like or sell both and buy a $1000 model in the caliber you prefer after you've decide which is a better cartridge for your intended use.

I pondered the same decision last year. Settled on a 22 WMR, and haven't looked back. Tree rats, hare and grouse are still 22LR territory, but coons and groundhogs the 22WMR is fantastic. Coyotes around here average 30-40lbs before winter, and most of my opportunities are 200yd shots, so I use a .270 for them. A .243 would be more ideally suited for yotes but that slot is still to be filled in the safe.

The downrange energy of the 22WMR is approx double the 22LR, with ~200 ftlbs at 50yds. Shooting the CCI Maxi Mag +V and TNT interchangeably, they both are 30gr and hit in the same place. Have had zero issue on ammo availability here.
The varmint tip 17HMR has similiar energy and ballistics to the 22WMR, so between the 22WMR and 17HMR, I don't think you can go wrong on either. But for coyotes, a .243 would be preferable in my opinion.
