i am stuck between which of these calibers to buy. i would like to hear some opinions. will be used to punch paper and on some small varmints. looking at a stevens scoped 22wmr or a savage with accu trigger not scoped.both are around 400.

I have and use both... but I sold my Savage HB in 22mag and kept the Savage SB 17hmr.
both are very accurate I just didn't like the HB for hunting and carrying around the bush I did buy a lighter Marlin in 22 WMR for hunting with. I don't think you can go wrong with either but I couldn't decide so I have both. My 17 gets used a lot more on paper and the 22mag sees more game.

EDIT I know that more then likely didn't help but since I also use 22 hornet I would keep my 17hmr over my 22mag if I had to choose one...

17HMR. check out mossberg bolt action .17hmr you can get one with a low power scope and a fold down foregrip/monopod for arround 400$ nice little rifle

My son and I have both :) They are both great!

.17 is cool...newer...and faster :)

.22 is 'ol fashion' it seems...

Seriously though..the 17 HMR is a great round with awesome accuracy.

ol' dude speaking..

I'd never take a moSsberg over a savage

I went ground hog hunting with a buddy and he used 22mag and my 17 out performed him, I also found I was taking shots to 200 yards where he was pretty limited to 150 max

HMR all the way! (don't let it's size fool you) It's one fast, flat-shooting round that amazes me every time I shoot it. V-Max rounds are astounding too.

I have used both and the 22 mag is my choice since the newer ammo narrows the gap of speed and drop to the point of being very little difference. The 22 magnum seems to hit harder on gophers as well.

I also have both. 17 hmr is more accurate, but both guns are fun.A litle bit more psi at the target with .22wmr.I've got some .22wmr rounds for $9.99 for 50. $13.67 for 50 .17hmr.
So .22wmr are a little cheaper.

It depends. Do you hunt dragonfllies or SUPER dragonflies? lol, no seriously 17 HMR all the way. Higher velocity and flatter trajectory = greater range.

I think this informal thread/poll was 8 to 3 in favor of the HMR. (not counting the few who discussed ammo. cost and such)...and you're picking the .22 mag. Guess you had your mind made-up already! :)

Look forward to hearing how you like it.
