17hmr or 22wmr

.22 mag has more KE at any distance and is slightly cheaper to shoot. HMR shoots faster, flatter, and is (IMO of course) the better all-around choice for those that do not exclusively hunt smallish game. To put it another way, neither wins in every category, and it wouldn't be the end of the world if you had to suffer owning both ;)

.22 mag has more KE at any distance

part of my reason for leaning towards the 22mag, and bucking the wind aswell.

17HMR for sure. I too would recommend you look at the Savage first. Or just get the Savage, be happy and forget Mossberg:slap:.

i never said mossberg, i don't like their plinkster, feels cheap to me. i am not 100% set on the 22mag tho, i do like the accutrigger on the savage. the savage i am interested in is the mako HB 17hmr, the only downfall with it is i have to get a scope for it. i think it will come down to if i can get a deal on the savage and a scope, if not i will prolly get the stevens in 22mag as it is already scoped. the stevens is $399 and the savage is $499 + a scope

Sorry, but the .22 WMR does not buck the wind better than the .17 HMR.

Our very own CGN rimfire ballistic chart sticky also confirms that HMR is less affected by windage than any other rimfire round, despite the very common opinion that the lightweight 17 grain bullet gets pushed around more.

I find it humorous that there are still people trying to claim that the 22 mag bucks the wind better even when the ammo manufacturer's own data says the exact opposite... priceless!

That is funny but I think we are making headway as most of the time with these debates someone has tried to compare the .22LR to the HMR by now.

i have both 17 falter shooting more delicate bullets
22 mag better for hunting larger varmints with heaver bullets, poachers love them .
i remove nuisance beaver and find the flatter shooting 17 works great but drifts more in the wind.
in a good rifle like cz you will be happy with either

Amen. I guess people don't realize that things that move faster get to their destination sooner... and that just happens to be a very important part of the equation... I guess people can believe what they want. If I had a nickle for every time I tried to explain that...
Of course there are distances where things do turn around, but they are quite a ways out there... distances the hmr is not really intended for.
I guess that leaves more 17 ammo for the rest of us.

.22mag does get bucked by the wind more than the .17hmr. That is a fact and has been proven again and again. This round was made to beat the .22mag in all areas and does,

both have there place but after just starting to shoot the .17hmr the .22 are in the back shelf of the safe now.

.17hmr is so much fun and shoot some frozen fruit and you will see how much more stopping power it has.
