Hi all - I am heading to the prairies for a few weeks of gopher slaughter and was wondering what your ammo of choice is for maximum carnage ie. exploding, flipping etc:D

Specifically is there an advantage with say a 20gr gamepoint (hollow) compared to a 17gr vmax. My rifle has only punched paper and I am sooo looking forward to this!!!!

You 17 HMR will get'r done, but not the explosive dismemberment your seek. Vmax are one of my favorites though, and will split'm like bananas.

Where 'bouts on the prairies you going?

Stopping in Strathmore for a few days then Blaine Lake north of Saskatoon will be the main area.

I read somewhere that the gamepoints were designed more for larger varmints like yotes but I just wondered if anyone who actually used both on gophers noticed any diference destruction wise.

I like the federal v-max shells compared to the other stuff I've tried. My savage will shoot 1/4" with them.

Well I've never shot gophers, but when it comes to ground hogs I find that there isn't much difference between V-shocks and XTPs, except that XTPs usually exit where the Federals usually dont. As for gore and guts it really depends on where you hit them, a ground hogs head is normally all one can see when walking the fields so the gut spilling isn't as common.

I'd be interested to hear about the penetration and expansion of the 15.5 NXT aswell, I would imagine it would be quite violent unless they made it harder due to copper content.
