17hmr versus gophers

My best WTF was that??? shot on a gopher came from a 270 hotloaded with 110gr hp's, that gopher did 3 complete turns while launching 7 feet in the air, well, what was left of him that is....:) Shot was under 40yds. Remington Accellerators did pretty close to that, but the bullets were a bit tough, need to replace with hp 50gr's to really have fun.:evil: Otherwisw known as the Red Mist Club.

From what the guys who own them say, the 17's will do that quite nicely though.

I found that I used my .22 less after I got a .22 mag. I also found I use my .22 mag less after I got a .17hmr, unles there are LOTS of gophers and within about 50 yards, then back to the .22. Sometimes I carry both in the truck.

At any rate, the kids think the .17 is da bomb 'cause it makes gophers do backflips.

:)

I'm pretty sure they are classified as vermin and you are absolutely allowed to shoot them.

Like Arctic has said - Not legal to shoot in BC on Crown Land. They are legal to shoot on private property. Its in the BC Hunting Regs. I do agree TG that they are vermin. good thing I know a bunch of private land infested with them. LOL.

Back on topic though, I love the destruction of the 17 AND the challenge of the 22 out past 80 yards with wind.

Invermere. Cranbrook here. We should GTG and do some sage rat killin'

I routinely shoot gophers out past 75yds with ease with my 22... granted it doesn't do the damage that a 17 does, but I still hit em and they still aren't breathing afterwards.

i agree with you ERT....I often hit them out to 200 yards with my Mossy 144. Whoever thinks that .22s are limited to within 50-75 yards has not really tried to shoot the calibers limit. I have pushed my gun's limit many times and it has proved up to the task many times. Does it make the critter bounce in the air? The answer is not at distance but if you are close enough (25 yards) and hit it right....the result can be surprising how high they fly.

Congrats to you, hitting gophers often with a .22 at 200 yards is damn good shooting where I come from.

It takes a lot of practice to hit distant things, My son and myself shoot golf balls and ping pong balls at the 200 yd. berm at the range quite often for practice. A good powerful scope helps immensely too. Learning to read the wind is a benefit too. Not a hit every time , but often enough to keep me happy. it is strange and surprising to see what the .22s can do over 250 yards.

I got my first 17 back in '04. At first it was love, then the attraction started to fade as I realized how much I was spending on ammo, 15 bricks a summer ain't cheap!

Then I bought my .223...... I haven't even shot my 17 in over 2yrs.

I use my .22 for shots up to 125y and the .223 for stuff out further than that.

I am sad to say, I just sold my 17HMR on the EE..... The final nail in that calibre for me.

Cheers!

Big Mouth

I got 37 pics like this...ran out of film...taken the same day ..same land.... will this do?????

17 hmr versus the .22 long will always be the choice between cost of ammo or the acccuracy of the 17hmr. I love my 17 hmr savage but the cost of ammo is high untill people start using it more, that should bring the cost down. I use 17 on the long stuff 100-200 metres and 22 on the near stuff and the 20 guage remington pump just for fun. so keep the mags full and your sights on target.

I bought a Marlin 17V because it was on sale and I wanted to try the new 17HMR. I changed the trigger to a rifle basix, put a bsa sweet 17 18x scope on it and have rarely missed with it since. I bought the marlin because it was cheap and I thought I could always trade up to a better gun later if I liked the caliber. After about 1000 rounds I see no reason to buy another one.

Fellow CGNer sniperelite and I went out twice last week and had a blast with our .22s.(pardon the pun..) The second time all we took was our Tacti-Cooeys, his with a hella-big scope and mine with irons. FUN!!!:) We actually pushed out past 100m, not all the time but once in a while. I've just traded my scoped .22 for a Savage 93r17 FV w/Sweet 17 4-12X40(?) scope; will be heading out again to see what it'll do as soon as it gets here. .22s not efficient past 75m? CRAP!!, crap I say..... When you've got a single shot and want an ethical shot, concentrate harder. Besides, beats the hell outta cleaning the basement:)

Back when the .17 was still pretty new a friend and I had a Remington 597 out for the day. One shot catapulted a gopher end over end 4 feet straight up into the air. The gpher was relatively undamaged but he was dead instantly. It was the funniest thing I have ever seen shooting to this day. So comical.

Look harder. :D
