17HMR vs 17WSM vs coyote?

I stopped using a centerfire 17 Remington on coyotes as it was not reliable on a running away shot. Broadside in the chest was fine but I wounded some up the running butt. I am sure they died eventually.

.243 is way better.
.243 kills yotes like the hammer of Thor. I've never seen anything else kill like that.

The rifle I'd likely use for yotes is a 17 Fireball. 20gr VMAX at 4000 fps is gonna be pretty effective to 200 yds.

A 6BR with 70gr Ballistic Tips would also be very effective.

My 17 Remington AI was putting 25 grains out about 4100 fps. Broadside standing at 250 yards was no problem.
The most effective 6mm I ever shot coyotes with was a 6mm-280 Improved... same loading data as a .240 Weatherby.

I don't cull coyotes due to my personal reasons but know those that do.. and they like the 17HMR though they shoot 20 grain bullets. For that reason I chose to try the CCI Gamepoint 20 grain rounds in my lovely little 17HMR T-Bolt. While the rifle and round are inherently accurate the added 3 grains makes a big difference from my personal observation. I cannot speak for it's lethality though from first hand.. However I can say that those that pointed out the round to me swear by them for exactly what your talking about. Cheers

Watch some vids discussing and testing 17 HMR vs 22 WMR. The 22 bullets don't expand much at all. Basically they drill a 22 cal hole.

The 17 HMR has much better terminal performance. Its not about energy delivered, its about the terminal effect.

As an example, consider the energy delivered by throwing a bowling ball. MASSIVE compared to a 22 rimfire. Which is gonna do the most damage if it hits you?
I completely agree that the 17 blows things apart but I've seen that my 17 sometimes dumps all it's power on contact and sometimes fails to penetrate deeply and leaves a gnarly surface wound causing the animal to bleed out slowly. I love my 17 and it's my go-to gopher gun but for reliable deep penetration I'm gonna go with 22mag. Please understand I'm not saying I'm right and you're wrong bud. It's all personal preference. :)(y)
That being said I saw 7 coyotes on Friday and didn't have either rifle. 😫

The things you see with out a gun in your hand.
I feel your pain as in while driving to work Sunday morning in the urban farm lands of CZBB in the fringe of the Subies headlights I spotted a smallish yoddel dog.
Not that I would shoot it from my car on a paved road, but if it where to cross my path I certainly would accelerate ;).
Shoot them with what you go, be it a .22 a 17hmr a 17wsm or a .22 mag , just get out there and shoot them instead of pondering the "what calibre is better" ;)
Tight Groups and Great Success !
Oh Yeah , pics or it didn't happen lol

It's like they know when you don't have a rifle and I swear they smile. Little buggers!
