Hey guys...back to thinking about a 17M2. Having spent a fair amount of time on RFC over the years, I wish CZs were offered in that caliber up here (would love a 452 American) but alas...they're not. I know the SAKO Quad kit includes a 17M2 barrel, I think Cooper will whittle one up for you if you have the $ and time...but I don't think I'd want to be over about $500 when the time comes. I've owned a Marlin 917M2 that I (wrongly) sold, but at this point..I'm not sure I'd want a HB gun anyway. The Marlin 717 has always been a gun I'd like to play with...but a problematic gun with OOB detonations~Marlin stopped making those fast. (and I want a bolt gun, not a semi) Only guy I knew who had a Savage in 17M2 had problems with his..so I'm wondering~am I missing a bolt action 17M2 model out there?

Would love to hear your 17M2 stories, and bonus points to anyone who posts a photo of an M2'd gopher. :)
 
I got the Marlin 917M2 with a Tasco 6x24 on it for my gopher gun. The thing is a friken laser beam. One of my guns that I would never sell. I prefer it to my Savage 17hmr even. It's "dead" on till a little past 100yards. Put it together for about $500 and worth every penny. Would love to restock a case or two of ammo but no luck lately. Any ideas where?
 
I have owned five 17mach2 rifles, and I still have a Cooper. It is my absolute favorite ground squirrel rifle, and it does a great job to over 100 yards. Given that I purchased most of my ammunition for around $70 per brick, I have saved about that much over the 17hmr for eveyr brick that I have fired. I purchased 20,000 rounds of Eley loads, and have fired 5,000 to this point, so that works out to a savings of $700 to this point, and about $2800, by the time that those 20,000 rounds are gone. These days only CCI loads 17mach2 ammunition, and it is sold by Hornady. They only produce a batch of ammunition every year or so, so if you find some, stock up.
 
I have two. A Marlin 917 with a ss heavy barrel and a black/gray laminated stock. My other is a CZ American. Like them both equally. I did lighten the trigger on the Marlin but wish I could get it lighter yet. Did the Yodave on the American. They are both tack drivers and are wicked on gophers. My go to gopher guns.

Like Stubblejumper I have stocked up on ammo. But only 10,000 or so. 1/2 of that Eley. Ammo around here is drying up as well.

You won't be disappointed if you can find one.

Hmm...sounds like you have one too many 17M2 rifles. I'll take the CZ...let's talk. :)

Thanks for the input guys~greatly appreciated. SJ's Cooper~well, I've owned 1 Cooper rifle (.204R) and while it was a fine specimen, I got a little too hung-up on keeping it beautiful. Crossing electric fences, crawling in dried-up cow patties to line-up a groundhog, laying in wet hay~didn't make that an easy job!

My Coopers in 17mach2, 17hmr, 17Fireball, 20Vartarg, 20 Tactical, and 260rem have synthetic or laminated stocks, and they are all hunted.. The one built on the very fancy New Zealand blank is a 22lr that doesn't get hunted with.

7 Coopers. Got it. :) Guessing we don't have the same budgetary issues. lol
 
I am a lefty so my options are pretty slim. That being said, I have owned 3 rifles chambered for the little .17. I still have two of them in my collection- a 10/22 conversion and a LH Savage heavy barrel. Both rifles are shooters, the semi loves Hornady and CCI ammo and the Savage loves anything I put in it.

I've been trying to source an uber-rare LH CZ 452 in this chambering but haven't had any luck so I plan on a CZ 452 rebarrel to Mach2 at some point in the future.

I use my Mach2's primarily for gophers but have had to dispatch 3 coyotes with them over the years when they turned up in the gopher fields. My experiences on these coyotes were that the little .17 is marginal at best on this size of animal. All required multiple hits to cleanly take them out and all were well under 100 yards away.

I had a Marlin 717 for several years, and have always regretted selling it. That little sucker was insanely accurate, and 100% reliable. I have read on the web of problems with cracked stocks, but the laminate on mine never had a problem, and I put several thousand rounds through it. I also had an H&R single shot which was nearly as accurate, and had a far nicer trigger.

I used them a few times on rabbits, but generally speaking they were plinkers, pure and simple. Standard procedure was to spread a bit of bird seed in a small cleared spot in the open field, exactly 125 yards from the back porch. Then a relaxing afternoon was spent selectively picking off the Cowbirds, House Sparrows and Starlings that came to the bait. At that distance, the birds "popped" nicely, and the others feeding nearby took very little notice. Great fun!
 
A 717 was my first Mach2. Mine, too, was quite accurate but the trigger left something to be desired. I found it a bit small for my 6'7" frame, always felt like a kids toy lol.

While I only owned it for one season, I don't recall any issues with the laminate stock.
 
Thanks for the kind offer to take the CZ off my hands 22LR but I made the mistake of selling a HM2 a while back. Won't happen again. Especially the C Z. It would ruin my collection of CZs.

lol...hey~no problem. Started looking around a little already. Not expecting to find one any time soon.
 
FYI it took me a long while to find the CZ. I was able to find a place in the US that was selling them. I had been bugging Clay at Prophet River for a long time. Told him where "we" could maybe get some. He followed through and low and behold I got mine!! It was likely a 2 year quest. He's a good man that Clay. Plug.

Still the best gopher destroying round ever...I remember driving to Calgary in 2005 just to get my first savage M2...and the converts I made after demonstrating its performance.

Care to post photos of the laminate/stainless? Planning on keeping both? ;)

I don't have an M2 yet, but I was in Jo Brook about 6 weeks ago and managed to buy 950 rounds of Hornady 15gr NTX or something....Just in case I stumble across a deal on an M2:rockOn:
 
I went the green mountain route..barrel from green mountain, reamer from the states...afternoon of playing around ..I now have a cz 455 in 17m2...
