18.6 Barrel for Makasi MK 15

Hey everyone,


Does anyone know a reputable gunsmith in the Calgary area?


I’m also looking for some guidance on what the process would look like to convert a Makasi to 18.6" and have it reclassified as non-restricted, either doing it myself or getting it done via gunsmith if required.


I’m trying to understand what needs to be handled through a gunsmith versus what, if anything, can be done by the owner, especially with CFO/RCMP requirements. Has anyone gone through this process before?


Also curious what barrel options I should be looking at, since the gas system is carabine.

Any advice or referrals would be appreciated.
 
ATRS and Calgary Shooting Centre can both definitely build custom barrels. Not sure about the Makasi specifics but I doubt it's a problem.
 
I honestly think if you want a NR it is much more painless to wait for the NR coming in later through the big distributor.

I will say ATRS or IBI itself would have the drawingsof a type AR barrel already and will be able to properly thread the barrel blank and torque the extension properly to 140 ft-lb. After that the barrel needs to be index pinned and so the gas port is lined up, and then the gas block goes in.

Unfortunately I have never ever seen a 18" barrel with carbine system in the US, so I think building it from semi-sketch maybe the only way.

Last I checked IBI no longer did AR barrels.
 
For prohibited firearms, can you transport the upper, like a WK180C you need the barrel from, or would someone have to remove the barrel, or have someone come to their home to remove the barrel for them?

Upper is not prohibited on the wk180
 
The gas system on the Makasi is carbine length, I believe? In that case any barrel from a WK-180 or WS-MCR should be fine although who knows what the actual gas port size needs to be.

Word is it is carbine length. I wonder if a WK or MCR handguard may fit, given it is tall? You would loose the anti-rotation tabs, of course.

True, but some folk installed longer handguards on their 180s , and some are looking for options to make an NR Mikasi look less SCAR gen 1 like.
 
Doesn’t the gas block also need to be pinned at the 12 0’clock position instead of the 6 o’clock position we are used to seeing on AR barrels that have a pinned gas block?

Yeah, that's true. So at a minimum you'd also have to drill the WK or WS barrel for a cross pin.
