18" barrel.... what for???

And a LOT of fun on a skeet field (even though they get you some looks from the hoi-polloi); I'm waiting for a 14" HP9 from Marstar so I can give "urban skeet" a try :D

As long as it's MANUFACTURED at a given length, it's OK no matter what the length is, but if the overall length of the shotgun falls below 26"/660mm, it becomes restricted. Something like a Serbu Super Shorty is legal, it's just in the same class as a handgun, and can only be fired at a range classed for "restricted".

The real question should be why would you want a 30" shotgun? Full velocity is reaches in about 16" - less with some loads. I can take all the geese I can stand with modified choke short barreled gun. With open chokes you can't beat them for upland or big game, and for a fighting gun there is nothing comparable.

An 18.5" tube is great for having fun with friends who don't shoot much.

Here's what to do.

Put on a folding pistol grip stock to make it look cool.

Let them shoot a couple of magazines of 2.75" birdshot. Pretty soon they'll be blazing away saying that all this talk of hard kicking 12 ga shotguns is a bunch of crap.

Then slip in a 3" slug.

Stand back and watch the fun!

I have always been a short barrell fan.... then I discovered I shot better with a longer bbl.
I am still in the short range, I use a 26" semi for waterfowl and Skeet, sporting clays etc. Almost everyone else is using 28-32"

Now for upland I have a Citori lightning in 26" 20G it is about 3" shorter than the semi. I used to love the idea of using a coach gun for upland but found the 26" swings much nicer.

I am planning to get a 21-24" semi sometime in the future for Upland/Turkey and whatever. I used ot have a 21" Remington 1100 youth but it was just a bit on the small side, a buddy of mine used it for a bout a year for skeet and did very well with it. He has a bad shoulder and needs a short gun.

I still like shorty shotguns but really have no practical use for them personally. Now a 16" bbl rifle... well that is a different story....

Have you ever tried Cowboy Action shooting with a 30" barrel. Obviously not or you wouldn't have asked such a silly question.

What's so silly about my question? I never said I had anything against them!!!

I started a thread a while back in which I stated that i had bought an 18" Rem870 express and was planning to use it as a bush gun. I was planning to use it for bunnies, grouse, plinking ect... All I got was alot of negative feedback about being a mall ninja and to stop playing video games. I was told it was not an adequate hunting set-up, BLA, BLA, BLA... So i thought this time I would re-phrase the question.

Where were you then? I didn't here you speak up and tell everyone about the positive attributes of an 18" barrel when it was popular to bash them... It's alot easier to jump on the bandwagon, agreeing rather than disagreeing with everyone, right?

I'm with Goose on this one. Not all of us have tried every aspect of every shooting sport. Saying things like 'obviously not...otherwise you wouldn't have asked such a silly question. just makes you look like a pompous ass. Why not just outline the merits of an 18" barrel, rrather than coming accross with an arrogant, caustic response. If that was your goal....mission accomplished.
