Looking at trying 180 accubond in 3006. 22" barrel. What velocity is ideal for this bullet weight. I dont want the bullet to not expand as it zips into moose and elk.

Also thinking of getting a 165 accubond to cook along through a 300 mag at around 3200 fps. Is this too much stress for that weight? Should I just go into the 180 accubond in 300 mag too?

Had max load of h4350 push a 165 at 2830-2850 fps(3006). Accurate and performed well on last years cow elk.

Ain't reloading fun?

Your velocity for the .30-06 will end up somewhere between 2700-2800 fps. with the 180's. Were it me, I would reverse what you are doing and use the 165's in the .30-06 and the 180's in the .300. Accubond's should be able to handle the speed though, if you want to push them.

Unless chrono is buggered, my 180 accubond in 3006 gave me 2476 fps. First round. Wouldn't register speed of next three. 4 rounds 3/4 " though.

That is very slow for a 30-06 and the 180 Accubond. Even in a 22" barrel, I expect to see at least 2750, using several different suitable powders.
Try IMR 4831, IMR 4350, H414/W760, Vihtavuori N160 or N550, RL19 or 22, Norma 204 or MRP, H4350. All should get you there. Dave.

What make is your chrono? I'd be very suspicious of such a low velocity. They can be finicky things, sometimes the light has to be just so. I find they work better on overcast days.

Something is not right for sure.

Any of the 30-06's I've owned will push a 180 grain bullet to 2750-2800 easy,
any of the powders Eagleye recommends will work.
My "go to" powder for '06 is IMR 4350, though I've used Win 760 and H414 with good results too.

My 300 wm is currently sending 180 grain accubonds out the barrel at around 2975 with 76.2 grains of 7828, which is not a real hot load.

22 inch barrel, imr4350 max published load of 55 grains imr4350.

First tested chronograph with .22, 1200 fps which seemed realistic. Shot the first round (3006, max imr4350) and got 2476fps. Next round down the pipe, would not register. Turned off and back on. Rest of shots for the range session would not register. Tried moving farther away, closer. Nada.

Who has a 22" barrel shooting same load? Would like to know what you got.

Chronograph was a shooting chrony brand. Green box. Meant for rifle.

I realize the nosler manual has a 26" barrel for published data, however I was expecting a faster reading that 2476fps.

Was in shade. Was windy today if that would affect anything. Wind sure didn't affect groups! 4 shots in 3/4 at 100 yds.

I was shooting 178gr amax with 56gr of imr 4350 and getting 2675fps. Never got around to trying anything else. With a 22" you should be able to get up at least in the high 2600's

I'd switch those around too. 165 for the 30-06 and 180 for the 300wm. That said Im have some nice results pushing Hornady GMX 165g with 73.7g of IMR 7828 through my 300wm. Chrony tells me about 2975 fps give or take 50fps. I'd like to try a different powder like 4831 or 4350 but so far Im liking the 7828.

Agreed.. I would Switch things around as well...... I had a Win model 70 featherlight in (22" Barrel) in 30-06. I was able to push the 165 Swift Sciroccos @ 3000fps with IMR 4007 SSC and was getting 1/2-3/4" groups. This was going to be my Moose load... then i reduced the powder by .5gr and was able to push the 165gr Sierra HPBT Gamekings @ 2900. This was going to be my Deer load. These loads were safe in my rifle and close to listed max loads.

MY friend shoots a 300 win and is using IMR 4831 to push 180gr bullets @ 3000. dont know his load info but i know it shoots very well outta his Thompson Centre Venture, and the Doe he got last year never new what hit her... 308 yards.. DRT

I had my Rem 760 .30-06 w/22" barrel out tonight. Loads were H4350 and 180 Partitions, Magnetospeed Sporter chronograph. Fired 2 rounds each as a quick pressure workup as this is the first pump I've loaded for. I wanted to find a max or any sticky bolt issues before diving in. Dave was right on the money with a max of around 2750. Where my best shooting load ends up is the next step.
54.0 - 2583/2593
54.5 - 2621/2580
55.0 - 2604/2627
55.5 - 2662/2651
56.0 - 2711/2662
56.5 - 2716/2715
57.0 - 2733/2745
57.5 - 2767/2753

The Accubond bullet will do 40" of moose and retain about 2/3 of their original weight............160gr 7 Rem Mag at 2920fps..........I like them.......Harold

So my final load was 57.0 grs H4350 under a 180AB that averaged 2726 FPS with an SD of 7 and ES of 21 over 7 rds fired over the magnetospeed. This was out of a 22". For comparison, Win Super X 180 was 2711 fps.

Sounds about right for speed for that loading. I was getting the same with 178gr amax and 56.5gr of imr 4350.

I have had great luck in the 30-06 with RL22 and 180 bullets. There are better than the accubond but it is a pretty darn good bullet. My experience with two 30-06 rifles is anywhere from 2740 to 2800 fps with no signs of pressure. No idea if my chrono is right but seems to mirror what others are saying.

After a lot of fooling around, I was able to get chronograph to work properly. My 165 grain load in 3006 is traveling 2870 fps. I also got a reading of 2750 with 180 grain loads in 3006. I feel both of these will be excellent for moose / elk. Likely going to the 180 3006 load for the better penetration and less wind drift in case a longer shot presents itself. Thank you for all the suggestions and comments on this thread.

Next will see what the 180 accubond is moving at in 300 mag.

Interestingly enough, the federal btsp 180 blue box ammo put 4 rounds into a inch at 100 yds. Hate when factory stuff is more accurate than reloads.

Also if the same federal 180 are meant for deer sized game, what could one expect to happen on an elk? My thoughts are it should be fine as hey, this is a 180gr bullet?! The bullets are a Speer hotcore I believe.

Am I wrong or should I get the premium grade federal bullet for elk in 300 mag
