i am completely new to guns and reloading.
what i was wondering was if a 180 gr bullet in my 338win would be like?
would i gain considerable velocity?
would it be even worth trying?
i also shoot a 7mmwsm and a 280 rem.would be for mostlly hunting muleys and maybe black bear.

do they even make a 180 in 338?- lightest bullet i've ever seen in 338 run 200 grains, and screams out of there at almost 3000 fps- way overkill for mulies and black bear- i run a 338 and i reserve it for grizzly only- but i use 275 grain at 2600 fps
 
i kmow they load 180s in factory loads so assumed the bullets could be bought.possiblly wrong. i dunno ,so is why i asked
 
Barnes makes 160gr, 175gr, and 185 gr.
Nosler makes a 180 gr.
Hodgdon has lots of load data for those. Didn't see .338 what so I won't quote velocities.
edit: went back a re-read original post. missed the 338Win.
Therefore:
160gr 3150.
175gr 3051
180gr 3157
185gr 3072.
So I guess you can throw them with the .338.

Hodgdon's site has lots of 180 grain data. Velocities run between 2776 and 3111 fps. Not with the same powder though. Your options for a 180 seem to be limited to Nosler, but there are 185 grain bullets from Barne$.
 
I would expect a .338/180, would be very similar to a .308/150 at the same velocity. When you ask if the .338/180 is worth trying, you must first ask, "What is it for?" A .308/150 at 3000 fps is a dandy deer load, and the .338/180 would be too. But when the game is larger than deer, I would suggest that you move up to the 225 or heavier.

If you stoked it up to shoot as fast as possible, the .338/180 would flatten trajectory, but at long range the heavier bullets would gain the advantage. At normal hunting ranges you would be unable to make use of any trajectory advantage in the field. Lets assume your rifle is sighted in for 200 yards, once your bullet passes that zero range, it will drop far more quickly over the next 200 yards than it did over the first 200.
 
I have my 338-06 spitting out the 160 grain Barnes TTSX at 3100 fps. It should make one hell of a nice long-range mulie load!

hey boo where did you get those 160's?in my 338 win i probally could load em u8p nd would they evermake a great varmit cartridge and probablly work on a mule deer or b/bear as well.

next trip to quesnel i will have too look rempel sales up.never heard of them
before.always dealt at franks.

Rempel Sales is out on the 2 Mile Flat on the North end of town.

They have been in Quesnel for years selling snowmobiles, bikes and ATVs. A couple of years ago they started bringing in guns, ammo and reloading supplies. Their reloading section is a LOT better than Chilcotin guns and miles ahead of Franks. As a bonus their prices are also a bit lower across the board.

So I take it you live in the Puddle??
 
Yes i live in the thriving metropolis of Bills Pond.
Now that i think of it a bit i have delivered sleds and bikes to Rempel Sales,but didnt know they sold guns and ammo.
Will definaltley check it out next Quesnel trip.Always good to know where new resources are available.
