Gday, with my usual favourite the Woodleigh as rare as hens teeth to find down under nowa days , i gathered what i could an ended up with quite a few 130gr ppsn , down to only a box of 150gr ppsn and that had me worried....

i ended up with 5 boxes of 140gr ppsn in .284 --- covered for a long while there.

The 30-06 though, with its shiney short barrel an handiness called for something to run it thru that was more available an likely to be for a while.

i looked around for a while an found a stash of Hornady interlock BTsp, i ended up with 200 in the old packaging, red an white from memory.

So , with that, after this March an April period of Fallow deer rut, i aim to develop and load a suitable combo of Varget , fed primers and 180 btsp for use on the larger Sambar deer- altho i feel i wont be over projectile-d with the 180s on Fallow bucks and deer in general, i feel there may be some expansion initially.

Many of you loading these for deer or larger game ? any reports on the Boat Tail aspect ?

will be out of 20 inch Abolt

WhelanLad,
I have not shot IL 180 in 30-06. Varget is a little bit too fast and will not get you high speed in 30-06 and 180 grains bullet. H4350 (you have another name for it Down under) will be better and Ramshot Hunter best, if you can find any. CCI LR is good for H4350 and Fed 215 for Hunter.

I use the Hornady 180 interlocks in the 3006 with imr 4350/ 56g. Never had a issue with them. I have both flat base and boat tail and distance I shoot it doesn’t change my results

H4350 (ADI 2209) might be a little more optimized for your 30-06, but Varget is quite capable of getting nominal factory velocities; and that's not exactly nothing. Might as well try it if you have it.

I've used a lot of Interlocks in 30-06 and .300 mag, but mostly with the flat bases. There isn't a moose or elk, or anything on your continent I wouldn't shoot with one. Never found Sambar or Rusa to be particularly tough to kill anyway.

The Horndady 180 IL bullet is what I mostly shoot in my 30-06 rifles. I typically use the flat base version, but there is very little difference between them and the boat tail. It is a good old "standard" bullet with consistent predictable results at 30-06 velocity. It might break up and shed its jacket if you try to shoot through the humerus/scapula joint, but enough bits will normally make it through to the vitals that you can use them with reasonable confidence. A side-on shot through the ribs of elk/sambar sized critters should produce full penetration and end up caught by the hide on the far side. I like your choice of Varget in your short barrel. It will produce "enough" velocity and noticeably less muzzle blast than slower powders.

Excellent info guys Thanking You.

I think powder is getting sometimes difficult to find, i am due to replace but will stick with 2208 for ease of use in the other cals an feel it suits the shorter tube?

velocity not my forte these days so a nice accurate load will be awesome.

i notice the nose of the projectile sticks out an the rest is well tucked in the case! but certainly look deadly.

yeah i seem to like vargets character , i loaded these up to 47gr of varget and the rifle began to bark, with ear plugs it was no drama, recoil is not flinch material, it is nice and sharp , no slow push etc. something i have just been used too i guess , to me it feels just like shooting a 150gr 308 load full house ? i like.

+1 at 100m the POI is, with my 150gr PPSN "Zero" (of +2or so/100) really suits my needs with this combo while i still flinging the Woodleighs across the canyons.

my bore is clean there is no sign of powder which i like, sometimes ya see the odd kernel in there but i figure varget is burnt an flushed really quickly.

its a long weekend in AU, queens Bday or some schit,..... sounds like a Hunt is in order...with said combo for said hind Sambar!

thanks guys

Twenty years ago or so a guy did a wet newspaper test with 30 caliber 180s. Wet newspaper is very good approximation, A guy at the old Barnet rifle range in Burnaby collected a lot of bullets from hunters, and that was his conclusion. If my old memory is to be trusted, the Hornady had a bit higher impact velocity window then most. 2200?? to 2700 fps. The narrow impact velocity was an issue with all cup and core bullets. The bullet manufactures would adjust it with the cup thickness and lead hardness . Bonding fixed that at the top end and plastic tips lowered it.

so i got to Chrono my 47gr Varget 180btsp load , she read a 2550fps from memory (20 inch) . an im sweet for 250 m with the 2-7x33 with the standard 1.5-2 inch at 100m poi.

i posted in the hunting thread of a btsp headshot that come apart big time but hit some hard stuff, very close... four days later i was able to shoot the same animal at 220m or so for a through an through..

Awesome- recover bullet or pass through??
i see the look on your face.. "work hasnt began" pose :)

That is a friend of mine in the photo. He shot it and yeah, he knew he was in for a long night of work.

The bullet wasn't recovered. Pass through double lung shot at just over 100 yds. Essentially no wasted meat.
