Benchmark is incorrect for the slug weight. Varget is suitable. A 5 grain variation in slug weight is negligible assuming safe loading protocol is followed. Some slugs with equivalent weight have very different bearing surface areas, and folks don't think twice when interchanging.
Also, if you aren't using a chronograph when testing, then your worries of "product waste" due to 185 grain weight not being in the book are mis-spent.
For varget, start at 40gr and go up, aiming for 2600 Vo based on a 24" barrel.

Not true at all. If all you do is chase after velocity, then your making noise but lacking precision.
I used to take the chronograph with me when developing loads but I found I was putting too much focus on the numbers it gave. When in reality, the rifle set up is only going to give you what it can in terms of mv and precision. You need to find the given rifles highest accuracy node, then shoot over a distance to calculate mv or just decide if the amount of drop is acceptable to you. If not, the only real thing you can do is change powders and start over.
I tried a new method of working up a load with my new FTR rig and found a very promising load very quickly and have never fired a single round through a chronograph with it. Muzzle velocity was simply calculated by measuring the amount of drop over distance. Turns out that the mv is in a useable zone and so I'm sticking with it.
