1851 .36 or .44?

If historical accuracy is a issue stick with the 36 cal.....I am quite shure no 1851 navys were made in 44.

If you want a historically correct 44 go with a 1860 army or a dragoon or a walker or a lematt.

Though I have shot a 1851 in 44 "rebated cylinder" and its a good design for that caliber.
 
I had a remington 1858 in .44 and it was fun to shoot. About same recoil as a .38 special if you load with 24 gr. Of course, if you put as much gunpowder as you can, it's another story.

I heard that .36 have almost no recoil. Again, the load you will use will make a difference.

If recoil and powder cost are issues, i'd go for a .36.
 
I'd say .36. Its not only historically accurate but shoots flat, and uses less costly balls and less powder.

With my Pietta 1851, .375 round ball w/ 20gr of FFFg, its easy to knock off pop can sized targets all day at 50 yds.
