i was talking guns with a co-worker the other day and he said he had an old gun at home for me to take a look at . next day he arrives in with an 1864 enfield in pretty decent shape . i know little about this one but am hoping someone can help me out . would like to figure out some history on it and maybe even an idea of value . his father had four rounds for it and he fired them off in her in 1972 . i have to admit that i'm not even sure of caliber , i think .577 in rimfire blackpower of course .
any ideas ??

It's a P1853 Enfield muzzle loader "Snider" conversion, probably a Mk.2**. "IF" the barrel and rifling (three lands and grooves) is excellent it could be worth $500.00 to 750.00. If it has been altered or refinished in any way you can half that value. History of the rifle would be assessed by any military markings which would be stamped on the butt stock and / or the butt plate tang. I have a listing here of the Canadian units. You can e-mail me at <hurlbutc@rideau.net)......Dave

It's the 3 band Snider Enfield conversion. It was the main rifle of the Canadian Militia from the late 1860's to 1896 when the government purchase the Mk1 Lee Enfield. It was also the rifle carried in the North West Rebellion with the exception of one company that carried the Mk1 Martini Henry. Most Canadian Snider's will have a diamond with the letters D.C. "Dominion of Canada" stamped on the side of the butt stock. On the brass butt strap there is probably two numbers. If so the first larger one is the number of the militia regiment that carried it . The second smaller number is a rack or weapon number. Just thought you may be interested in the long history of this rifle in Canada.

As told above, 577 CF Snider Enfield 3 band. Barrel cond. is v. important. Stock should have factory stamps too, hopefully no repairs. Value $400+ about right if all is good or better. I let one go with a repaired toe in butt for 300 last year. Saw simular to yours go for 400 at auction last month.
