Here my newfound joy.....maybe. 1864 Springfield musket.

It is 62 caliber rather than the standard 69. I am playing around with the idea of converting it to a flintlock and would appreciate comments.

Is it rifled ??
If not she could have been bored smooth after her life as a military arm was done, it would explain the 62 cal, as origionally it would have been a 58 cal rifle,if she was not a flint-percussion conversion from a 69 cal smoothie flinter "I do not think it was by the look of the lock plate"


It has alot of history as a percussion arm, you may later regret it if you convert it to flint.

Not to mention the amount of pain in the neck the job would give you "Just look at the area around the nipple."

Is that new wood or is it refurnished?

I don't know if you can find a lock that would drop in but there is no way that the breech end of the barrel can be converted without cutting it up.

Personally I think it would be a lot easier to leave it as it is and find a flinter someplace else. As far as I know, black powder stuff doesn't come under all the new export restrictions in the US. Make life a little easier.
 
Conversion?

Considering it's apparent condition, converting it to flint brings to mind the word "desecration".

Well worth preserving as it is for what it is.
 
Conversion...perversion

I have to agree. Converting it is not a good idea. I thought that it was flintlock/percussion conversion and i could reverse engineer it so to speak. It was originally a 69 cal and someone has droped a 62 cal barrel in it.
