Hi folks,

Still fighting with this revolver. Maybe there’s some new folks in here that can help.

Pietta 1873 Revolver. The cylinder stop is not staying down on half ####, and the cylinder is locking up.

The cylinder locks up nice when the hammer is forward, and as I’m nearing the half #### position, the cylinder stop comes down, cylinder spins freely- and as soon as I hit the half #### position, click, and the cylinder stop pops up, and locks the cylinder.

Any advice?

I suspect the cylinder stop spring is broken. I broke mine on my Uberti and had to order one from Stoeger Canada. IIRC the sprin invovled is a flat spring with small arms on it. Find a schematic of the 1873 and you will see the one I am talking about. I don't pretend to be an expert by any means when it come to these guns but that was my experience. It is an easy fix that you can do by yourself. The 1873's were not the most robust pistols ever made but they did work even with a number of broken parts.

Take Care

Bob

It sounds like the bolt is broken. Im not sure about pietta but on a colt that part needs to be hand fit to get everything timed properly.

I don't think there is any hand fitting on Pietta's, but there should be. They are kind of hit and miss, Price point is good.

Look up BCrider and PM him, he knows his stuff.
These guns are very easy to replace parts, once you know what needs to be replaced.

I just reread your post. Has the gun always had this issue or did it work fine and then one day?

It worked fine until one day.

The bolt is in good shape.

I ordered a new bolt. Old looked really crappy.
I also ordered a new hammer cam. Also looked terrible.

Hope that fixes my problem.

As stated before the inner workings of these guns are very simple.

That should fix your problems i would think.
You will probably need to fit and adjust the bolt so it is timed properly. This cab be acomplished by carefully removing some length off the right side of the bolt. The part that rides on the cam. Shortening makes the bolt come up earlier. Hopefully this helps.
