I have been asked to help look after a estate and in the firearms is a 1874 French gras rifle in 11mm. I do not collect military but have looked at lot of milsurp stuff and this is the first Gras I have seen complete only missing the clearing rod. It appears to be rough but all there and would likely clean up and I am not sure on the bore so we will say it is rough also Any idea on a ball park value and is there any interest in these?
Thanks any help is appeciated

Pics would be a help. Is it this gun? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fusil_Gras_mle_1874

If so, it's an antique and doesn't need to be registered.

Its condition sounds to be poor, and while it can be "cleaned up", that means that the original finish is long gone. Cleaning rods are pretty much unobtainable which affects value, but if the rest is there and in decent condition, that's a plus. If the bore is good, then it can be used as a "shooter", but otherwise it would be a placeholder for the collector until he can find a better one.

I'm guessing if the bore is salvageable it's about a $300 gun.
