A new manufactured Winny 1885, how strong is it in 45-70 mode? I realize it is not a #1 in the strength department but can you stoke the fire abit from the 1250-1300 fps factory? Strongly leaning towards one but could hold pat and keep looking for a used #1 45-70. Don't need Buffalo Bore style power just looking for better than middle of the road performance and general thoughts on action strength?

From what I have read and learned the new 1885 action is as strong as the Ruger No 1. I have this rifle in 405 Winchester and 375 H&H and have never had any problem with heavy factory loads. I have not reloaded anything yet for either as I am moving and down for a while to do that. The old guns can't handle the high pressures, but to my understanding the new built 1885 can. There are a few guys on here that have the 1885 also and hopefully will chime in to give you a second opinion.

Keep in mine that the newest 1885s are being built to handle the 375 h&h. It's hardly a weak action.

The newer 1885's are just as strong as the No 1's . I've owned and loaded for both rifles , in 45/70 no less , and they're amply strong for top 45/70 loads . You'll run out of shoulder before it runs out of action strength lol . Personally , I like the 85 and Browning B 78 more than the No 1's . It's not a matter of which is better , it's just esthetics , the hammer rifles just do it for me .

I use load data from the Speer 13th reloading manual. I then cross it with same powders from any other manuals with the exception of Barnes. Example Speer 350 gr hot core from the Speer reloading manual Ruger #1 and #3 and 1885 browning single shots. Imr 3031 55 min 61 max. Lyman#49th Ruger #1 and #3 only. lists the same bullet Speer 350 hot core same powder Imr 3031 51 min 57 max.
