Hello fellas
For those of you in the know can you tell me what the differences is between Winchesters 1885's, Brownings 1885's or Browning B-78's.
i got a itch on buying one of these in 45-70 but haven't made up my mind yet on which model, mostly if not all will be target shooting.
let me know which one would you choose and why.
Thanks

All three are made my Miroku in Japan,
Most are made without the long upper tang for mounting sights.
All are drilled and tapped for scope bases.
The only ones I have seen that have the long tang are the BPCR and the Traditional hunter.
Latest 1885s have a fully free floated forearm, B78s forearms are attached to the underside of barrel.
Winchesters are oil finish and fairly plain walnut.
Browning have the classic gloss finish with better to excellent grade wood.
I have the Browning Traditional Hunter in 45-70 and love it.

Not exactly your traditional looking 1885 45-70 Target rifle but this plain Jane Winny is startling out to 200yds once I found the right load recipe. Handy as heck if you decide to do something else with besides punch paper........ It does bark a tad.

Last time I checked my Son's B78 has the forend attached to a hanger the same as my 1885, but the B78's is a bit shorter.
The Trapper pictured is the same as my latest 1885, with a long upper tang only mine came in 30/40 Krag.
Also the triggers on the earlier 1885's were easier to adjust than the later models that I had, as were the B78's.

I have one of the C Sharps 1885s. in22lr.Its an accurate beautiful rifle.Yhey are a costly gun but if you have the money they are definitely worth it

I have an earlier B-78, which certainly has the forend hanger. It has a 22 inch octagon barrel. Yes, I'd like a longer barrel, but you shoot what you've got.
Mine is very accurate with 405 grain bullet, black powder loads. It likes a bullet with deep grease grooves with lots of lube.

I was thinking of getting a C Sharp .22lr low wall with a period correct scope, maybe when the borders reopen I’ll take a drive down to Big Timber again:)

I just bought this, Pedersoli's are famous for their accuracy, most of the 45-70 1885 I have seen had a crescent style butt stock and I am not interested in that, I wanted a shotgun style butt stock with pistol grip. This rifle has a single set trigger, when set is under 1 pound

I have a Browning 1885 chambered in 22-250 with a 27” barrel. It clover leafs at 200M off the hood of the truck with Hornady superformance 50 gr V-Max Varmint ammunition. The fit and finish is superb and the weight of the octagon barrel provides the stability I prefer for longer range shots. If you get a chance at one in 45-70 I would grab it up in a heartbeat.

Yup!
Seeing something that looks a lot like a Ruger #3 buttplate.
Not something you want to shoot prone for sure. Gotta roll with the punches.

Even with it's 26" barrel my 1885 in 270 Winchester is not much longer than my short-action A-Bolt with it's 23" barrel. Obviously it isn't as "handy" as the RSI.

Owned quite a few over the years, here is my latest in 1885 trapper 30/40 Krag before I re-barreled it
TwTCv8q.jpg

After the re-barrell by Ron Smith ( RKS)) with a 26" . medium sporter in 260 Remington with a gain twist ..
That particular scope is only on there for load development BTW, a more versatile scope is on there now.

I ain't gonna lie, and I cheat with a slip over butt pad for everything but hunting........... ;-)
