I am getting a 1886 kropatschek rifle, the Portuguese one. Just wondering if all they bayonets are interchangeable? Can I order a Steyr 1886 Kropatscheck bayonet for it? or a French model 1874 bayonet? Also any info on the rifle itself would be great! Thanks a ton!

There are a couple of old threads in this forum on the Krop, including one that went several pages. Try the SEARCH function.

There are an interesting rifle for so many reasons: last blackpowder repeating rifle made, rifle that solved the feed-interruptor problem, prototype for the Lebel, excellent design, wonderful quality of manufacture, first smallbore repeating bolt rifle made, used in more wars than you can shake a bundle of sticks at.

The Austrian-made Portuguese Kropatscheks which are floating around in Canada were the very LAST ones ever to hit the market and also came from one of the smaller contracts. Indeed, the only reason they survived at all is because they were still being used rather than scrapped. You think a Portuguese Krop is expensive, just TRY to find a French Marines Krop!

Nice point is that you can form brass from .348 Winchester or, if you cheat a bit, you can slightly reform 8mm Lebel brass for a short-neck version. They can be made quite accurate, also.

There are a couple of guys on this forum with extensive experience working with the Krop.

They are one of the NICEST pieces of Nineteenth-Century military equipment available for much under a King's ransom these days.

Sorry for not using the search button, searched google and didnt find much. Thanks for the info on how to make brass for it, and the price wasnt bad at all, its just it is in pretty rough shape.
