1891 Peruvian Mauser

Just purchased an 1891 Peruvian Mauser barreled action and I need a stock to fit. I'd like to make this into a nice little bush rifle since it has the short barrel. Any suggestions as to what kind of sporter stock that this action will fit? I'm aware that some modifications will be necessary for a stock to fit. Would a Swede sporter be close perhaps?

I don't know how many changes the mauser style actions went through, but you may be best served by looking into the synthetic stocks made by Ramline or others of that style. Most, like the Lee Enfield stocks, are simply "drop-in", or need very minor tweaking to make them fit. The big advantage of course is that although they may not be pretty, they are great for bush punching. The one I put on my No.4 Lee Enfield did a great job, and even came with a Pachmayr recoil pad. I don't know what the purists would say, but I used auto body filler as a bedding compound, and Pam (the cooking spray) as a release agent. It worked like a charm! Lots of luck!

A lot depends on if you want it to have a period look. I've seen several sporting 1891 mausers and they were all very nice rifles. Classy as all get out. The few that were scoped, bore side mounted bases on the receiver. All of them wore the straight grip style stocks. The stocks looked very much like those on their military cousins. They were finished a lot better and didn't have the cleaning rod cut outs. Some were wearing full length fore arms, but that was it.

They are beautiful, reliable and smooth. They are also chambered for some great cartridges, like the 7.65 Argentine. A powerful round for its day and more than adequate for most needs today.

There are a lot of 1890/91 mausers out there with cut down stocks that are in almost new condition. Sadly these beautiful rifles don't bring much of a premium on todays markets, despite their long and proven battle histories.

I'm not looking for anything fancy bearhunter, I just need a hunting stock to drop the action into. I don't mind a little fitting or bedding.

The only thing I could see on Boyd's site that would serve my purpose was a completly uninleted stock. That would probably be a little more than I could handle. I'm told that the 98 Mauser stock won't fit. Would a Swede stock come close I wonder? I don't mind a little bedding work to make it fit if it's a least close. Does Boyd's ship to Canada?

The swede is a pretty far cry from the 91. This short barreled 91 you have, was it cut back by Bubba or is it an actual carbine. Does it still have the crest on the receiver and is the bore in excellent condition? I may have an interesting trade for you if it's all original.

No I don't think the barrel was cut at all, I believe it is the original length. It's being shipped to me as we speak so I don't have it in my posession. It's a barreled action and bolt assembly. The owner described the barrel bore as excellent. I thought all Mausers were similar when I bought it, so I figured that finding a stock for it wouldn't be too hard. Needless to say it's proving to be a challenge.

HS, from your description, you may also need a triggergaurd, screws, a magazine and butt plate just to make it up as a sporter. If you decide to restore it, parts can be really difficult to come by. Let us know what you get and we'll try to help from there.
